Notes
a. Note:   Contents of a tribute written by Lemuel Hilleary:
Sister Sarah J. Smpson Miller, wife of Elder J.H. Miller, of West Goshem, Ind., died at her home, in West Goshen, March 10. She was born near Nappanee Ind., March 21, 183, and at the time of her death lacked only a few days of being sixty years old.
She was under the motherly care of Sister Catharine Brumbaugh from the time she was two years old until she was married to Edl. J. H. Miller when she was about eighteen year old. In the year 1860, and a few months after their marriage, they both united with the church (Church of the Brethen). Her husband not knowing it was her intention until he told her he was going to unite with God's people, she replied, "I am going too, for I am ready."
To them were born two children, a son and a daughter. Both were called away in infancy. Sister Miller had two foster brothers and three foster sisters. I am told by one of the sisters that the attachment between them could have been no greater than had Sarah been her mother's own child. That close attachment has always continued.
Although she has been a great sufferer for forty years, she has proved herself to be a patient and faithful wife, a true helpmate in bearing her part of the ministry for nearly all these years of suffering. Few men have ever been favored with such a power to stand by their side and to hold up their arms amid the shock of battle as Bro. J. H. Miller. And wherever she has lived she has been a shining light to both young and old.
Sister Sarah had strong convictions of obeying the entire Gospel. She never was ashamed to follow Jesus in his own appointed way, in her modest and plain attire.
He husband tells me that he never knew her to engage in devotional exercises without her prayer covering. She wore it according to the direction of Paul, "because of the angels." She was a lover of the Sunday School. Both superintendents and teachers held her counsel as sacred, and often would seek her advice. The Sunday school children had so much love for her as a Christian mother that some would visit her bedside during her last hours on earth, and would shed tears of sympathy and love in her behalf. She has two brothers and one sister living. She has one half brother and one half sister living. Her last sickness covered the space of about three months. We often prayed with her and as long as she was able to talk she would always say that our prayers helped her bear her pain.
