a. Note:   f the first Omaha chief. According to Lewis and Clark who visited his grave in 1804 he died in 1800. The Indian name of Chief Blackbird was Wagigasabey [WazhigaSabe]. It is also thought that the county was named Black Bird after the mythological Thunder Bird of the Indians. The boundaries of the county were defined by an act of the legislature approved March 7, 1855. When he was 3 or 4 he climbed into the back of the wagon. Something spooked the horses and the wagon took off. Luckily the wagon circled back toward the farm. His dad hit the horses on the head with a shovel to stop them. He became very emotional retelling this story.
Note:   Thurston County was named for United States Senator John M. Thurston who assisted in organizing the county out of Dakota, Wayne, and Burt counties. It was originally named Blackbird County in honor o
