Note: The information as to William's middle name, birth date and birth location provided here comes from page 92 of the "General Catalogue of the University of Vermont and State Agricultural College, Burlington, Vermont, 1791-1900" (University of Vermont Press 1901). Other information provided here about William is taken from pages 385-86 of the "History of Clinton and Franklin Counties, New York" (J.W. Lewis and Co. 1880). Per the latter, William was educated partly in Quebec and partly in Castleton and Burlington, Vermont, earning a Masters of Arts degree from the University of Vermont before beginning his legal career (attorney, then judge) in Montreal before moving to Malone, New York in 1853.
