Note: NI10342 Mervin was born in Toronto but raised in Cobourg, Ont. Mervin had been given Commando Combat training in Scotland. Placed in the front lines when they landed on Continental Europe. As Mervin was advancing with his Regiment up a hill a shell exploded close enough to throw him into the air, landing hard enough to render him unconscious for days. He awoke in a hospital in France. When he recovered enough he was transferred to the Ordinance Corp. He heard about the birth of his son through a telegram & his son would be 18 months old before finally geting to see him for the first time. After the war Mervin & Irene bought a 6 acre farm in Vernonville (east of Cobourg). He & Irene later sold the farm & moved to Port Hope & lived there until their deaths. Mervin died after an 8 year battle with cancer.
