a. Note:   1975 Who's Who in California Who's Who of American Women 1975-1976 * * * No children * * * has: Catherine E. Kay Of R.R. 5, Wellsboro, died December 23, 2001. Her husband of 52 years, C.A. Al Whartenby, predeceased her on January 16, 1998.Mrs. Whartenby was born in Wellsboro on June 30, 1920, the daughter of Robert Dean and Elizabeth Dwyer English. She graduated from Wellsboro High School in 1937 and from Mansfield State Teachers College (now University) in 1941. At the beginning of World War II she went to California, where she was employed by the War Department, 9th Service Command, at the Presidio of San Francisco. In 1954 she joined the San Francisco agency of Connecticut General Life Insurance Company (now Cigna). She held several positions with the company,including being the first woman in field management. When she retired in 1985, she was the National Director of Qualified Plans. While with Connecticut General, she graduated from Golden Gate College School o fLaw with the degree of Doctor of Jurisprudence. She also attained the designation of Chartered Life Underwriter from the American College of Life Underwriters. She was a member of the California and American Bar Associations, belonged to several Estate Planning Councils in California and was listed in many editions of WHO'S WHO, including THE WORLD WHO'S WHO OF WOMEN AND WHO'S WHO IN FINANCE AND INDUSTRY.After retirement from business, she served as president of the TiogaCounty Historical Society for 9 years. She was past president and secretary of the Board of Directors of the Green Free Library. Duringher presidency the Library conducted a most successful fund drive,which raised over one and a quarter million dollars. Mrs. Whartenby was also a member and past president of the Wellsboro Friday Club.She is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, James D. and Joyce A.(Mitzi) English of Wellsboro; two sisters, Elizabeth A. English and Jane E. Wetherbee, both of Wellsboro; a brother-in-law, David B.Whartenby of Gibsonia; Several nephews and nieces and several great-nephews and great-nieces. She was predeceased by two brothers,John Donald English in 1971 and Robert Edward English, who was killed in action in World War II. Friends may call at the Tussey-Mosher Funeral Home, a Life Celebration Home, 139 Main Street, Wellsboro, PA on Thursday, December 27, 2001 from 1:00 - 2:00 PM. Funeral to follow at 2:00 with Rev. Michael J. Sullivan officiating. Burial in Wellsboro Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Green Free Library, 134 Main Street, Wellsboro.
