a. Note:   Wellsboro Gazette of June 5, 1996, p7 has: NORMA A. THORNTON Norma Alexander Thornton, R.N., 76, of Westside Ave., Honesdale, died Monday, June 3, 1996, at the Wayne Woodlands Manor, Waymart. Born June 24, 1919, at Lloyd, she was the daughter of Harry and Susie Compton Alexander. She was a graduate of the Wellsboro High School class of 1937. She received her registered nursing degree from the Williamsport Hospital Nursing School, Williamsport. She was a nurse for Dr. William White in Wellsboro until her marriage to La Verne A. Thornton on Feb. 14, 1953, at which time she moved to Honesdale. She received an accredited records technician (ART) certification and became director of medical records at the Wayne County Memorial Hospital until she retired in 1984 with 31 years of service. She was a member of the Central United Methodist Church, Honesdale, where she served on the administrative board, board of trustees, and the Methodist Women's Club. She was a member of the Washington Irving Chapter #209, Order of the Eastern Star and was Worthy Matron, 1966, and she was a member of the Honesdale Women's Club. She was active in the Red Cross assisting at the bloodmobiles and blood pressure clinics. She was also a medical records advisor to some Wayne County nursing homes. Preceding her in death were two sisters, Jeraldine Gambell and Verna Bowling. Surviving in addition to her husband of 43 years, is a sister and brother-in-law, June and Edmund James of DuBois; a brother and sister-in-law, Harold and Virginia Alexander of Wellsboro; several nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be held Sunday, June 9, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the Tussey-Mosher Funeral Home, 139 Main St., Wellsboro. Funeral services will be held there immediately following the calling hours. The Rev. Eugene A. Charsky will officiate. Burial will be made in the Knowlton Cemetery, Gaines Township, Tioga County. Donations may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
