Notes
a. Note:   1870 NY census lists 9-year old Loren as LORENZO. Also listed in the household at that time is 30-year old Lorenzo (relationship not yet known). The 1880 census lists 19-year old Loren as a "Cooper", along with 17-year old brother George. At that time, the family was living at #6 Exchange Street. The 1900 census lists 38-year old Loren still a cooper, as well as his 17-year old son Edward, and as owner of the home at 1010 Avery Avenue (with mortgage). According to his death certificate, he was born in Mallory, NY, and lived in Syracuse for 50 years, which suggests he moved into the city some time around 1879. Of his parents, the death certificate lists only Lester Capels as his father; his mother's name and parents' birthplaces are listed as "Can't be learned." He is buried at St. Mary's Cemetery, Dewitt, NY, Lot 2.
The cause of his death was cancer. Though he died when she was very young, Kate Spies remembers that the cancer was in his jaw and his face was heavily bandaged.
