Note: Obituary for Thomas J. CAPELS, died September 27, 1926 CAPLES [sic]--At Walton, N.Y., September 27, Thomas J. CAPLES [sic]. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Loren CAPLES [sic], two sisters, and eight brothers, Mrs. John RIORDAN, Miss Mary A., Edward, Lester, Roger, Loren, Harold, Lawrence and William CAPLES [sic]. Funeral at the family home, 1010 Avery avenue. Notice of time later. [Source: either the Syracuse Herald-Journal or Post-Standard, September 29, 1926; notes in brackets and some capitalizations added by VC] Tommy was killed while driving a tarvia truck which lost its brakes and rolled down an embankment. His obituary notes the location as Walton, New York, but Aunt Kate recalled her mother having said he died on Camillus Hill in the wintertime. Contact with researchers in the Town of Walton, NY and at the Delaware County Historical Society failed to reveal a newspaper report of the event. His death certificate, issued in Walton, New York, sheds the following light on his untimely death: "Fracture & dislocation of cervical vertebra, due to be [sic] thrown from tar truck when it left road & went over bank Instant death", signed by E. Ray Gladstone, M.D. . His parents are listed as Lorey Capels and Mary Carroll. His trade was described as "Helps on auto-[?] truck". Janis Mahoney of 214 Hayden Avenue, Syracuse, was the informant. We do not know who she is or what her relationship was with Tommy Capels.
