Note: The 1880 census of Geddes Village, Onondaga County, New York State, lists an Eliza, Housekeeper, 44 years old, in the Lester CAPELS household at 6 Exchange Street. It also indicates that her parents were born in the State of New York. Might the name Eliza been a common abbreviation for the name Elizabeth? According to Myrtle Hill Cemetery Administrator, Frank Adamski (April 7, 2001), her name is listed as Elizabeth Ann in the cemetery register and she was buried on July 31, 1902. Her Death Record transcript lists her name as Eliza Ann CAPLES. It records that she died July 29, 1902, married, age 66, at 106 8th North, of Apoplexy (a stroke?). Her father's name is listed as Henry DOLEY. In a space labeled Mother's Maiden Name is the name "Permelia." There is no space for mother's first name, which this perhaps actually is. Three death notices and obituary for Mrs. Capels, died July 29, 1902, provide yet additional names: EXPIRES IN STREET ------------- Mrs. Eliza A. Caples Dies While Out Walking ------------- DECEASED 66 YEARS OF AGE ------------- Apparently in the Best of Health and Spirits, the Aged Woman Suddenly Drops to the Ground Lifeless--Her Companions Rush for Assistance, but When Physician Arrives He Discovers That the Woman Is Beyond Aid. -------------- Mrs. Eliza Ann Caples, an aged and highly respected resident of the western part of the city, died last night in Willis avenue shortly after 8 o'clock while out walking with her friends. Mrs. Caples, who was 66 years of age, left her home at No. 106 Eighth North street, near Chemung street, in the Ninth Ward, earlier in the evening, apparently in the best of health and spirits and she showed no symptoms of indisposition until she had nearly reached the bridge over the Erie Canal in Willis avenue. Suddenly she clutched the arm of one of the women accompanying her and sank to the ground lifeless. Her two companions were panic-stricken for an instant, but recovering themselves, one of them went for assistance. She procured aid and the lifeless form of Mrs. Caples was borne to a nearby house and a physician summoned, but she was beyond the reach of medical skill. Coroner D. F. Mathews was notified and gave Undertaker Louis McKinley permission to move the body to the dead woman's home. He will investigate the case this morning. Mrs. Caples left home at about 8 o'clock with a friend for the purpose of taking a walk. On the bridge over the Erie canal in Willis-ave. she sank to the ground and soon expired. Coroner Matthews investigated the cause of death this morning. The remains were removed to her home where funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. to-morrow. Burial will be in Myrtle Hill cemetery. Mrs. Caples, besides her husband, is survived by one son, Adelbert, and one daughter. [Source: The Syracuse Post-Standard, Wednesday, July 31, 1902; capitalizations added by VC] The second notice is perplexing in its listing of survivors. It lists a son Adelbert, which was a surprising name, and a daughter, but does not list her son Loren John, who married Mary Agnes Carroll. Is this the same daughter who married John Ryder? The following census information would appear to eliminate the possibility that George and Adelbert are names for the same person, one being a first the other a middle name. The index for the 1870 Census, Syracuse, Ward 1 provides the following information: CAPPELS , Lester--32 , Eliza--33 TONGS , Adelbert--15 , Henrietta--13 CAPPELS , Lorenzo--8 , Lorenzo--30 Ten years later, an index for the 1880 Census, Geddes Village, provides the following information: CAPELS , Lester--43 , Eliza--44 , Loren--19 , George--17 , William--73--Father
