Note: William A. Bradley is buried in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery west of Marshall AR. Birth and death dates are from the tombstone. Bobby June Cash Mays, SEARCY COUNTY ARKANSAS CEMETERIES BOOK I. * Obituary, THE MOUNTAIN WAVE, April 20, 1901, as reprinted in James J. Johnston, SHOOTINGS, OBITUARIES, POLITICS, EMIGRATION, SOCIALIZING, COMMERCIALIZING AND THE PRESS: NEWS ITEMS FROM AND ABOUT SEARCY, COUNTY ARKANSAS 1866 - 1901: "Death of an Old Citizen "On Saturday the 13th inst., Mr. W. A. Bradley, an old and respected citizen of near Snow Ball, died of dropsy of the heart, from which he had been ailing for about four years. He was 74 years of age, and leaves seven children to mourn his loss -- A. A. and J. W. Bradley, and Mrs. Martha Renfroe, Wayne, J. J. and G. G. Bradley and Mrs. Emma Owen, all of whom live on Calf Creek, except the last named, who resides in White county. The remains were laid to rest in the Pleasant Grove graveyard on Sunday the 14th, surrounded by relatives and a large number of friends who had gathered to pay their last sad tribute to a kind Christian neighbor. "Mr. Bradley was born in Wayne county, Tennessee, in 1826, and came to Searcy county in 1850. He settled on Bear Creek, where he lived up to about eighteen years ago, when he removed to Calf creek. He was highly respected by all who knew him, and the community, in his death loses an honored and worthy citizen." Note that the phrasing of the obituary divides the children into two groups: A. A., J. W. & Martha were Wm's children with wife Sarah Hamm. Wayne, J. J., G. G. and Emma were his children by wife Nancy Thornton. * Abt. 1844: Wm Bradley married Sarah Hamm. Sarah's surname "Hamm" is from undocumented internet sources, but is supported by circumstantial evidence. In the 1860 Search County AR census, William and Sarah Bradley (age 30, born SC) are in household 758-749 while nearby are Sarah's reported brothers Eber S. Hamm (38 SC), household 772-763, and Asa Hamm (24 TN), household 790-78. Ten years earlier, in 1850, Wm & Sarah Bradley had lived near E. S. Ham and other Hamms in Wayne County TN. Ten years later, in 1870, Wm A. Bradley and his second wife Nancy (33 TN) are living in the household adjoining Eber's (households 21 & 22) in Sulphur Creek Township. Nancy and her first husband, S. J. Cooper, had lived in this household next to Eber in the 1860 census. Apparently, when William married Nancy, they combined households at her location. * 1850 Census, Wayne County TN, District 13, page 343A, enumerated November 6, 1850: William A. Bradley 24 TN; Sarah 26 TN; Martha 5 TN; Carolien 4 TN. Mark Bradley 50 SC, with wife Elizabeth 48 SC and children, is nearby and might be William's father. * October 18, 1852: William Bradley appointed a road overseer in Wayne County TN. From County Court Minutes, Wayne County Historian, Volume 6, Number 1 (March 1993). * 1860 Census, Searcy County AR, household 758-749: W. A. Bradley 32 TN; Sarah 30 SC; Martha 15 TN; Anderson 9 TN; Nancy 7 AR; John 3 TN. Other Bradleys in Searcy County in 1860: (1) Household 590-582, A. M. Bradley 26 TN, wife Nancy 21 GA, children; and (2) Household 591-583, Barton Bradley 21 GA, living with John Roberts 30 TN and wife Nancy 25 TN, children. These Bradleys may or may not be related to William. * According to an online unit roster, in late 1861,William A. Bradley served as a private in Company G of the 45th Regiment of Arkansas Militia. The militia predated the Civil War, but was called into Confederate service to hunt down the members of something called the Peace Society in northern Arkansas early in the war. It mustered at Burrowville (now Marshall) on November 26, 1861, and mustered out December 20, 1861. Another source indicates William A. Bradley served with Company G of "Lt. Col. Nichol's Missouri Cav." Presumably this is a reference to Jackman's Regiment of Missouri Cavalry, which served under General Marmaduke. This service would have followed the milita service. See Rena Marie Knight, CONFEDERATE BURIALS IN ARKANSAS. * Before 1864: Wm's wife Sarah died and he married Nancy Thornton, the widow of Samuel J. Cooper. In the 1850 census for Wayne County TN, Nancy Thornton 16 TN lived with her parents in household 1037-1051, Mark Bradley lived in household 1039-1053 and William & Sarah Bradley lived in household 1043-1065.
