Source: Jack Nordquist research. Lars left home in 1837 at age 17 to work as a farmhand. Maja left home in 1838 to work as a maid and after working at 5 different farms in Frykerud parish, she moved to Nor parish in 1845. After Lars and Maja were married in 1846, Lars moved her into his parent's home and they lived there until their deaths in 1897 and 1989. After 1866 his father is listed as being infirm and his mother became sinnessvag (feeble-minded). Lars ultimately owned 1/32 of a farm at Rustad and must have lived in abject poverty. In 1868, for example, he was trying to support his 4 children, his wife and his sick parents on a farm which probably didn't cover much more that 5 acres. During the later years their son Johan August took care of the farm.
