 !GEORGIA HISTORY: Hernando de Soto's 1540 expedition ws the first European incursion into the part of the Cherokee's and Creeks' lands that woudl become Georgia. By 1566 Spain had established Franciscan missions on St. Simons and Jekyll Islands and on the immediately adjoining mainland. To the noreth, the British warily eyed the Spanish settlements in Florida and Georgia and decided that a bulwark was needed against possible encroachment. To this end, a charter was granted to James Oglethorpe for a colony at Savannah, Oglethorpe's own purpose was more idealistic; he intended the colony to be a semi-utopian refuge for debtors and protestants, upon whom contemporary Britain heaped equal scorn.

 !1870 CENSUS: 12th Land District, Whitfield County, Georgia. He is listed living with his mother, brothers and sisters, no father listed, William, 20, was at school, Martha at school, and George at home, and family was farming. He was 16 years old.  !1900 CENSUS: He is listed with, his family, Edna, his wife and his children. He was a farmer. He owned his own farm. He had been married 21 years. His father born in N. C., his mother born in S.C. Daisy was working as a cook. Victor, Tolliver, John, and Paul were farm laborers. Stanton, Annie and Thomas were at school. They had 10 children and had been married 21 years. Edna said her father was from Vermont; her mother from Missouri.  !PERSONAL APPEARANCE: He was taller than Edna, maybe had curly hair, wore a full and wide mustache and a beard full at the sideburns. I have a photograph of them, which could have been a wedding photo. He wore a

 !1904 DEATH: 22 April 1904. He was only 45 years old.
