ROBERT HALL MEETS WITH PECULIAR FATE FALLING TREE GRIPS HEAD LIKE JAWS OF FEROCIOUS ANIMAL -- DEATH CAME SUDDENLY AND WITHOUT WARNING -- FUNERAL UNDER AUSPICES OF FRATERNAL BROTHERHOOD. Robert J. Hall met his death on the Cone Ranch yesterday morning in a most remarkable and unusual manner. Hall in company with Geo. N. Setley was felling a tree the men having a contract to cut a certain amount of wood. The tree the men were working on leaned slightly and after they had sawed into it more than half way it split open, the butt of the tree shooting into the air and remaining supported by that portion yet on the stump. The men then attempted to saw off the remainder of the tree, and as they did so the support of the butt of the tree gave way, snapping up against the trunk like the jaw of an alligator, catching Hall's head like a vice. The unfortunate young man was killed almost instantly. Setley was powerless to relieve his friend, and had to get the help of a Mr. Barner. The men sawed the tree in two before Hall could be removed. Coroner Decker was immediately informed and went at once to the scene of the accident and held an inquest. The remains were brought to the Fickert undertaking establishment and prepared for burial. The funeral will be held Thursday and will be under the auspices of the Fraternal Brotherhood. Robert J. Hall was 33 years old and was the son-in-law of Andrew Norris, of Antelope. His wife and a little child survive him. 13 Jan 1910: 'Record of Burial' - Obtained Apr 1997 from Hoyt-Cole Funeral Home in Red Bluff, CA: (the following are only portions of the burial record) No. 577.
