Note: Solicitor General of the Eastern District of Georgia (1833-36); U.S. District Attorney for the District of Georgia (1836-38); Member of Congress (1843-45); and Charge d'affaires in Vienna, Austria (1845-49). In 1858 he was elected to the State House of Representatives and served as Speaker of the House. In 1860 he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Baltimore, MD. On Sept. 19, 1861, he was commissioned Lt. Col. in the Confederate Army and placed in command of Skidaway Island, near Savannah. By November 1861, he had organized the 4th Batt. Georgia Inf,,(Seven Companies), which in May 1862 was increased to a Regiment of ten companies, and redesignated the 60th Regt., Georgia Inf. On May 19, 1862, he was promoted to Colonel, and served in that capacity until Aug 1863, when he was detached to organize nonconscripts for the defense of Northwest Georgia.
