Note: Copy of Indenture for C&J Clark 1859 'This indenture witnesseth that JOSHUA WHITCOMBE, by and with the consent of his father, SOLOMON WHITCOMBE of Street in the County of Somerset, doth put himself Apprentice to Cyrus and James Clark, aforeaid,to learn their art and with them after the manner of an Apprentice to serve from 22nd day of May last unto the full end and Term of Seven Years from thence the said Apprentice his Masters faithfully shall serve, their secrets keep, their lawful commands everywhere gladly do. He shall do no damage to his said Masters nor see to be done of others, but shall tell or forthwith give warning to his said Masters of the same.He shall not waste the Goods of his said Masters nor lend them unlawfully to any. He shall not commit fornication nor contract Matrimony within the said term, shall not play cards or dice tables or any other unlawful games, whereby his said Masters may have any loss, with his own goods or others, during the said Term, without license of his said Masters. He shall neither buy nor sell. He shall not haunt Taverns or Playhouses nor absent himself from his said Masters ' service day or night unlawfully. But in all things as a faithfull Apprentice he shall behave himself toward his said Masters and all their during the said Term. AND the said Cyrus and James Clark in consideration of the services of the said JOSHUA WHITCOMBE rendered as aforesaid, shall pay him four shillings a week during the first three years, five shillings per week during the fourth and fifth years, six shillings per week during the sixth year and seven shillings a week during the seventh and last year, and their siad Apprentice in the art of fitting, cutting or preparing materials for manufacturing shoes,which they use by the best means that they can, shall teach and instruct or cause to be taught and instructed. Finding unto the said Apprentice during the said Term, one suit of clothes, two pairs of hose, two pairs of boots, two shirts every year and one extra suit at the expiration of the said Term, provided he shall of given full satisfaction to his said Masters durinf his said Apprenticeship AND for the the true performance of all and every the said Covenants and Agreements either of the said Parties bindeth himself and themselves unto the other by these Presents. IN WITNESS wherof the Parties above named to these Indentures interchangeably have put their hands and seals the fifteenth day of November and in the Twenty Second Year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lady Victoria by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom of GREAT BRITAIN and IRELAND Queen Defender of the Faith and in the Year of our LORD One Thousand Eight Hundred and Fifty Nine'. Joshua's wife died and he subsequently lodged at an address in Bristol St Philips. He appears there in the 1881 Census.
