Note: n the Royal Navy from 1914 to 1918. He completed his basic training on HMS Impregnable, an old wooden ship of the line, anchored off Cremyl in Devonport. He served on HM Ships Cornwallis and Lord Nelson, the latter being involved in the Dardenelles campaign. He was apparently invalided out with eyesight problems. He once worked on a chicken farm near where the present Street by-pass is and also helped in the construction of Greenbank swimming pool. During the Second World War he was at Filton, Bristol building Beaufighter aircraft. On his death in 1987 he was cremated and his ashes were taken to sea by his grandson, Stephen, aboard HMS Active and he was given a full burial at sea off the coast of Muscat, Oman.(Lat 058ʿ 30' E, Lon 024ʿ 24'N)
