Parks 72, former Garrett teacher and coach,author and renowned collector of Indian relics died Wednesday of a heart attack in Gainesville,FL. He was spending the winter there with his sister, Mrs, Nelson Smith. Mr Parks lived in Garrett since 1937. He was born Feb 12, 1908 in Steuben County,the son of William P. and Amanda Parks. He married Mebel > Hinklin on August 4, 1931. His wife proceded him in death. Mr. Parks is survived by one brother Ira Parks,Carson City NV, four sisters: Mrs. Richard (Wilma) Helmuth,Carmel, Mrs. James (Maria) Fox, Milford OH,Mrs Richard (Florence) Bourn. Old Saybrook CT, and Mrs Nelson Smith Gainesville,FL. Mr. Parks retired from Garrett High School in 1971, after 20 years of teach social studies and 15 years as coach of all sports and athletic director. He was famous for his work with what he called "the birdstone culture" (Indian relics). Most of his several book were on the subject, and he also lectured about Indian artifacts. Well-known Parks book titles are "The Girl Scout Man" and "Thanks Badge to Mercy". Mr Parks graduated from Hamilton High School, and earned a bachelor's degree at the University of Illinois and a masters at Kentucky University. He was a World War II veteran. He belonged to the Mason's at Hamilton its extension chapter in Garrett and the Scottis-Rite was a past president of Garrett's Lions Club, and belonged to Garrett United Methodist Church. The funeral will be at 1:30 p.,m. Monday at the church. The Rev. Ronald Bowman pastor of the United Methodist Church in Garrett will officate. Burial will be in Garrett's Christian Union Cemetery. Friends may call at 1-8 p.m. Sunday at McKee Funeral Home.
