a. Note:   N15 1775 Thomas bound himself apprentice to his cousin Joseph II for 4 years and 2 months to complete his term of 7 years & for further improvement, following his father's death in that year. His father David, on taking out his freedom in 1764 had registered once more the familiar Nowill mark D*, and when Thomas took out his freedom in 1785 he reregistered the same mark. 30/9/1785 Freeman of Cutlers' Company, and reregistered D* 25 March 1786 Founder partner of "Hague & Nowill", Meadow Street, Sheffield, with modest capital of £49. 3. 9 After 1788 the firm was financed by William Willis of Grindeford Bridge. 1798 Founder of "Thomas Nowill & Co." on retirement of Thomas Hague. He retired at the beginning of July 1825, leaving his sons, William and John to carry on. His Will was proved 15 June 1837, the executors were his son-in-law James Dixon and his son by his first marriage - William Frederick Dixon.
