Note:   Matilda Anna Vogel Bek died in Toledo, Ohio, where she had lived with her daughter and son-in-law, Selma and Arnold Asbury. Funeral arrangements were made by Eggleston-Meinert Funeral Home in Oregon, OH, where visitation was conducted Tuesday, 8 Jan 1974. The body was transported to Charleston, WV, where visitation was conducted at Bartlett-Burdette Funeral Home Thursday, 10 Jan 1874 by the Rev. John Parks of Bream Memorial Presbyterian Church, where Tillie had been a long-time member prior to moving to Toledo, OH with Selma and Arnold in 1958. See burial address for further information.
In Toledo, Tillie was an active member of Eastminster United Presbyterian Church, where she was part of the Ladies Aid Women's Association and the Loyalty Bible Class. She also enjoyed getting together with "Dubbs" (last name) and other friends at their respective homes to play canasta and other card games.
After Selma and Arnold married in 1936, they moved in with Tillie and John Bek, with whom their daughters Marguerite and Dottie were still living, in order to help with expenses, since John had lost his job at Triple State Electric auto dealer after the death of his brother Hugh, who had been a partner in the firm and the one who had invited John and Tillie to move from St. Louis to Charleston when John was jobless in St. Louis.
After Marguerite married and left the house, Arnold proposed that he and Selma build a house rather than to continue paying rent. They built the house that still stands (19 May 2006) at 946 Woodward Dr., Charleston, WV. Tillie, John and Dottie Bek moved there with them, though Dottie married within a year or two after they finished the house.
John and Tillie lived with Selma and Arnold from that time on. John died at home. Tillie helped provide child care when Jean and Doug Asbury were born as well as cooking meals for the family during the week, when Arnold and Selma were both working, and cleaning the house. She was active into her 90s, but gradually became hard of hearing, forgetful, and easily disoriented. At the time she was described as having "hardening of the arteries to the brain," but whatever was actually happening in her body, she finally became a danger to herself, and Selma could no longer safely leave her at home alone during the day while she and Arnold were working, especially since Jean and Doug were no longer living with them year-round.
Selma found a licensed home where ambulatory seniors could live, and Tillie lived there for over a year. During that time her ability to connect appropriately with reality became more and more limited. Often she could not recognize Selma as her own daughter. In late 1973 Tillie fell in the house and was taken to the hospital with a broken leg. Whether she twisted and the leg broke and she fell, or she twisted and fell, breaking the leg, is unclear. Her lack of mental clarity caused the doctor to recommend not repairing the break, since she would be unable to participate meaningfully in her own recovery process. She was placed in the Cherry Street Nursing Home, where she died 7 Jan 1974.
