Note: Buried Oak Hill Cem., Cedar Rapids, Iowa Fay ended his formal education with the 8th grade and went to work in the local coal mines to help support the growing family of Hayes and Mary. He left the Centerville, Iowa, area and moved to Ottumwa, Iowa, and then to Cedar Rapids where he became an apprentice steam fitter for one of the railroads. He also worked part time in a cigar store / pool hall as clerk and attendant. Went to work for the Cedar Rapids Gas Company and stayed there for 33 years. He educated himself by correspondence course and worked in sales and customer relations at the Gas Co. as well as being in charge of meter reading and billing, leaving to buy an insurance agency in Exira, Iowa in, 1952.
