  Thomas P. Presley is likely the son of Joshua Preslar, Jr., last found in the 1860 Henderson County, Tennessee census. In the 1850 Anson County, North Carolina census, there is a 10 year old Thomas P. living in the household of Joshua Preslar. Joshua & family moved to Henderson County, but there is no sign of Thomas again until 1866 when he married Mary E. Carpenter in McNairy County, Tennessee. Thomas & Mary are listed in the 1870 Henderson County census with their first three children. Thomas' Civil War pension application shows him enlisting in February of 1863 in Jackson, Tennessee, with Company G of the 3rd Michigan Volunteer Cavalry. The unit was assigned to patrol the Mississippi river from southern Missouri to northern Mississippi and all over West Tennessee, but, due to a shortage of horses, ended up spending a good portion of 1863 waiting for new horses in St. Louis. While his pension application forms show he was born in Anson County, North Carolina, there are no explicit mention of parents or siblings. He first shows up in Dyer County in the deed records, buying land from an E. A. Henderson in RoEllen in late August of 1883.
