Note: From a Bery Family History commentary sent to me (David A. Crea of Pocatello, ID) by e-mail from Rodney Jackson of Shreveport, LA?) in March of 2000: Joel Berry applied for a Revolutionary War Veteran's Pension in 1833, Pendleton County, Kentucky. He stated he was born in King George County, Virginia, in 1754; he did not know the month of his birth or the day. He said his father recorded his birthdate in his Bible, but he did not know what became of the Bible. He did not mention the names of any of his relatives except his brother William, who served as a lieutenant and later as a captain in his Virginia militia company. The application states Joel Berry lived in King George County when the Virginia militia drafted him in 1775. He served in Colonel (Fielding?) Lewis' Regiment, Captain Joseph Rogers' Company, with Lt. William Berry as second in command. He spent most of his time at an armory as part of a guard detail. He fought in no battles. Private Joel Berry served for five years and one month altogether. In 1780 he moved to Hampshire County, Virginia, and two years later he moved to Mason County, Kentucky. He finally settled in Pendleton County, Kentucky, where he applied for the pension at the age of 79 years in 1833. A letter attached to the application states Joel Berry moved to Indiana in 1838 to live with a daughter whose name was not given, and states he died there on February 28, 1843. Roster of Soldier and Patriots of the American Revolution Buried in Indiana states Joel Berry died February 28, 1843, Rush County, and was probably buried in East Hill Cemetery, Rushville, Indiana. It states his wife was Anne ---- and one of his children was named Holesworth, born 1784 and died 1871. Tyler's Quarterly reports a Joel Berry appeared in court in King George County, Virginia, April 4, 1784, and proved he supported the American Revolution by donating horses and other goods (5:55). By this time our ancestor lived in Mason County, Kentucky, and, if this was he, then he expected a sum of money to make the journey worthwhile. On the other hand, this may be a different Joel Berry; the 1790 census of Virginia listed three men named Joel Berry, but none of them lived in King George County. Rebecca Berry, his daughter, married Richard Mullins of Pendleton County, Kentucky. She was born June 1, 1789 and she died February 5, 1852. I [Rodney Jackson of Shreveport] have a picture of her tombstone.
