Notes
a. Note:   It is said he was his father's favorite, A blacksmith in Kingston (Plymouth) until about 1752), he moved to Wareham, then to Newport, RI and finally, at the urging of his friends the Bradfords and the Robinsons, to Maine, settling about 12 miles from Thomaston in what is now Cushing, ME. In late 1775 he was chosen Captain of Cushing's newly-formed militia. He was described as "a stout, fleshy man, kind and social" by R.C.Davis of Cushing. After 1776 he was three times chosen Moderator of the town meetings, nine times Assessor, twice Collector and was one of the Committee of Safety. His grandson, James, said his grandfather was a man of intelligence, enterprise and means. He was evidently a worthy and esteemed man. He had 5 sons and 4 daughters. All 5 sons followed the sea, 2 as Master Mariners; 3 sons died at sea. He and Mary were buried on Garrison Island, Maine.
He appears to have been an ardent friend of liberty.
