Note: A fine high school athlete (pitcher), he joined the U. S. Army before WWI, rose to the rank of Captain (Co. K, 30th Infantry, Third Division) and was killed (wounded and gassed) at the Second Battle of the Marne. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal, the Croix de Guerre with palms (and another one long since thrown out by my late mother).
