Note:   "He was extensively known to the business portion of this community, by whom he was held in high esteem on account of the talents he displayed in his business relations, as well as the uniform suavity of his manners, and other generous traits of character, which marked him in private life."   "He was the son of James Adams, Esq., one of the numerous immigrants from Essex County, Mass., who in the infancy of this metropolis, and have done so much to increase its business prosperity and to elevate its social position. The deceased was paying teller in the [Bank of Washington], and occupied a high position in the Masonic Order."
  From: The Evening Star, March 12, 1860: R50/224 "Death of Mr. Joseph Adams The death of Joseph Adams,the active and efficient teller of the Bank of Washington, and son of James Adams,Esq., for many years cashier of that bank, was announced yesterday to his numerous friends, causing general sorrow. Mr. Adams had previously been unwell with pneumonia, but had recovered . On the 22nd of February he took cold from exposure that day and again recovered had sufficiently to resume his duties at the bank, and he was in his office until Wednesday. He was again taken sick, and his disease proved to be the typhoid fever, which resulted fatally yesterday. Mr. Adams was highly esteemed by his large circle of acquaintances. The loss will be deeply felt by the bank, as it will be no easy matter to fill the position with one as competent to perform all the duties. In consequence of his death, the bank is closed today."
