His source: "Ye Atte Wode Annals" by E. F. Atwood, 1203-1928, B10 F19 (call number is now 929.273 At95a) There is another FGRA sheet, submitted by Frances M. Seamans, 116 S. Lesueur St., Mesa Ariz. Sources are "Wood Family of Swansea, Mass"; Par. Reg. of St. Martin-in-the-Field, Lond 1, v. 25; (The call number is now 942 B4ha); "Ye Attewode Annals" B10 F19, pt 1; Mass. 20 V. 3 p. 1941 (This is Mass. (This is the will of John Atwood dated 1643 pr 5 June 1644, Plym.) Both FGRA sheets have a "2" before the name of wife, Sarah Masterson, but have no other wife listed. An FGRA sheet of his parents, submitted by the Genealogical Society for Rosalia Kelsch Est., showed a first wife, Ann. I have not been able to find any source for this. There is no mention of a first wife in "Ye Atte Wode Annals" nor in the "NEHGR" ariticle. (see below) LDS proxy temple ordinances are in the 1997 British IGI from temple records. The first FGRA sheet of John and Sarah lists 9 children, Mary, Sarah, Abigail, John, Nathaniel, Isaac, Mercy, Elizabeth and Hannah. The other has four different children as the first four in the family, born at Swansea, Bristol, Mass., then John, Elizabeth and Mary. The deed given in the "NEHGR" article (see below) gives the correct children.shows the daughter Abigail as third child, born abt 1647, but an article "The Mary Atwood Sampler" by Ruth Wilder Sherman, found in "NEHGR" vol 144 (1990) pg 25-26, shows her sixth, born between 1656 and 1660. Since she was married 1676 she may have been born later than 1647 but probably not as late as 1660.
!From "Ye Atte Wode Annals": "John Wood, alias Atwood, came to Plymouth 1635-6, evidently with his uncle, John Atwood. ... propounded freeman in 1647. In1648 (with his brothers) received a joint grant of land. Each, in turn was in charge of the herring weir. ... settled in Plympton, the part now Carver." From New Eng Hist and Gen Reg, vol. 144 (1990), pg 25: "John was a proprietor at Plymouth in 1636, juryman in 1638 and in 1643 was on the list of those men aged 16-60 who were able to bear arms (Charles H. Pope, "The Pioneers of Mass.", 1900, pg 511). In his will, dated 22 Nov 1675 and proved 7 Mar 1675/6, John Wood Sr. of Plymouth bequeathed his entire estate to his wife Sarah, after her death to be divided among all his children with a double portion to son John and 'to all the rest both sons and daughters (unnamed) an equall proportion.' Inventory of the estate of John Wood alias Attwood deceased was taken 26 Jan 1675 and it was substantial for the period, totaling 153 pounds 6 shillings 5 pence. This included some eight parcels of land in Plymouth and Middleboro, one of which was on the south side of Captain Bradford's land (Plymouth Colony Probate Records, unpublished, hereinafter Plym. Col. PR, 3:1:155). An inventory of the 'Remainder of Goods chattels & Credits of John Wood formerly of Plimouth deceased and of Mary (sic) his relict & widdow also deceased' was taken 2 April 1701 (Plymouth County Prob. Rec. 1:339). Far more is learned about the family from the probate records of John Wood and from land records. Administration on the estate of John Wood's son John Jr. was granted to Nathaniel Wood on 7 Mar 1675 (Pope, 511). Inventory of the estate of John Wood alias Attwood Jr. was taken 6 Mar 1675/6 and came to 47 pounds 2 shillings. (Plym. Col. PR, 3:1:178). In March 1675/6, the court ordered that Nathaniel Wood, 'appearing to be eldest brother of John Wood Jr. alias Atwood lately deceased,' should have a double portion of the estate, and the rest should be divided equally among the rest of the children of the late deceased John Wood Sr. alias Attwood: Isack Wood, Mistris Mary Holmes, widow, Sarah Fallowell, Abigaill Leanard, Mercye, Elizabeth, and Hannah Wood alias Attwood (Nathaniel B. Shurtleff, "Records of The Colony of New Plymouth in New England" ... [Boston 1855-1861], hereinafter "Plym Col. Recs.", 5:188). On the 24th of June 1685, Nathaniel Wood, alias Attwood, of New Plymouth, New England, sold to Mr. Nathaneill Clarke of said town, for 4 pounds, his portion of land in Plymouth, mentioning 'Sarah, my mother, relict widdow of my late father John Wood, alias Attwood, Mary, Sarah, Abigaill, Mercy, Elizabeth & Hannah, my sisteres, the daughteres of the said John Wood' (ibid., 6:161-163). On the same day the widow Sarah, Mary the wife of Major William Bradford, Sarah the relict of John Followay (Fallowell), Mercy Wood and Hannah Wood released their rights in the land (ibid.). On 10 July 1685, Elizabeth Nye, wife of Caleb Nye, also released her rights (ibid., 6:163)." 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 Change Date: 2 Dec 2002 at 23:15:37
