a. Note:   "A longtime resident of Kopperl, Bosque County, TX. holds an honorable position in the records of pioneer Texas. He is widely restpected both for his business abilities and his personal character. He is a native of Washington, D.C., having been bornunder the shadows of the national capitol, April 14, 1826...[He] was raised in the federal district, well educated in the public schools, and especially trained in the sentiments of honesty and industry, which have indeed proved a good foundation for future success, and for which he never ceases to be grateful to his parents. In the year 1849 he left home and went to New York. Here he remained for a few months, and in 1850, following the tide of emigration, came west, locating for two years at Palmyra, Marion County, Missouri. A great flood of settlement was flowing west to California, bearing on its crest the brave and daring, and [Mr.Barry], being a man of this character, mounted the crest. So he started overland
