Nathaniel Atwood was one of the first settlers of Lakenham, now Carver. Born at Plymouth Colony, 25 February 1651/52, the son of immigrant ancestor John and Sarah (Masterson) Wood alias Atwood, "Nathaniel Atwood was a Deacon and a farmer and lived on t he Salmon Atwood farm in what is now Carver" (Atwood by Shurtleff). Nathaniel married Mary, probably Lucas, daughter of Thomas L ucas. Mrs John Barclay of Whitman Mass detailed reasons for identification of Nathaniel Atwood's wife as Mary Lucas in a well reasoned article in The American Genealogist 41: (200-205) Change Date: 10 FEB 2004

!Initial source: Family group sheet in the FGRA collection of the Family History Library, Salt Lake City, Utah, submitted by Laurn R. Rice, 4020 E Slauson Ave., Maywood, Calif. His sources: "Ye Atte Wode Annals", by E. F. Atwood, pt 1 pg 1, 3, 23; "Wood Gen." (A9A58) pg 12. Child #2 added by Edith Haddon Littleford, 330 E 19th St, Idaho Falls,Idaho. This sheet has his birth, death with no place, year of marriage with no place and names of parents. It has Mary Morey as wife. Another family group sheet, evidently compiled by Dorothy D. Hall (now deceased), has the same information but adds "Carver or Plymouth" as the place of death, "Plympton" added in writing, and a question mark, also in writing, following the name of wife. The sources are "Compendium of Amer. Gen.", vol. 3-6-7; "Desc. of Wm. Shurtleff"; "Plymout h Landmarks" by Davis, 1883, pt. 2 pg 8; "Plym. Curch Rec." Vol. 1 p 264; "Ye Atte Wood Annals" B10F19; "Am. Fam." (Q973 D2am) p 41; "Mayflower Descendant" vol 1 p 142, "Plymouth Vit. Rec.". An article in "NEHGR" vol. 144 (1990) pg 26 says his birth is in Plymouth Colony Records 8:13. The articles mentioned below show that the part of Plymouth where his family lived was first called "West Meadows", then "Lakenham", incorporated as part of Plympton and finally incorporated as Carver. His tombstone is in the Lakenham cemetery in Carver. Other sources: "American Families", pg 45; "Plymouth Vital Records" found in "Mayflower Descendant", Vol. 1 p142; Vol. 2, pg 236; "Publications of the Colonial Society of Massachusetts", Vol 22-23; "Cape Cod Series, Mayflower Planters", by Hills, Vol. 2 p109; "Plympton Vital Records" pp11, 246, 439, 534; Plymouth Church Records", pp 264, 271, 280; "Epitaphs from Burial Hill", pp 30-36; "Carver Vital Records", p145. According to "Ye Atte Wode Annals" Nathaniel's wife was Mary Morey, but this is in question. (See notes for Mrs. Mary Atwood.) There is a marriage in the 1997 IGI of Nathaniel Atwood and Mary Lucas 21 Jan 1683 Plymouth, LDS proxy sealing 13 Sep 1980 SLAKE (1260633 film). (Mary Morey is in my file of unconnected persons, RIN 760) LDS proxy temple ordinances for Nathaniel are on the FGRA sheet and that of his parents, but earlier baptism and endowment were found in the 1997 IGI from temple records except the baptism had no temple indicated. For some time I had another Elizabeth, born 1685/6, listed in this family. It was in Dean Davis' records, not on the FGRA sheet nor in the "American Genealogist" article. In the IGI only with sealing to parents, 14 Feb 1967 IFALL, from temple record. Since she is not recorded with the births in Plymouth Colony records, I have deleted her from my records. (MDR)
From the article in "The American Genealogist" V. 41: "At the time of his marriage, about 1682/3, Nathaniel Atwood was probably living in Lakenham, then part of Plymouth and although a church was formed in 1696, called the Upper Society; the town was not incorporated as Plympton until 4 June 1707 and the births and marriages had to be recorded at Plymouth before the latter date. That is probably why we find all of Nathaniel's children recorded in Plymouth. "There is no record of his marriage and it was noticed in this search that scarcely any marriage records in the Town of Plymouth are now extant for 1682-3. Nathaniel's father died in 1675-6 and in a short time he inherited the bulk of his estate, his brothers having died unmarried before or soon after their father." Nathaniel was buried in the Lakenham Cemetery which is on a hill overlooking the little village and was still in use at time of writing of the article in 1965. Lakenham was the early name for what is now North Carver. It was for some time part of the town of Plympton. 1 2 3 4 Change Date: 2 Dec 2002 at 23:04:09
