Notes
a. Note:   ELSIE IVA SMITH Elsie was the daughter of John and Nancy Jane Coffee Williams, and was born near Humeston, Iowa, August 04, 1890 and departed this life, Janua 20, 1975 at the Lucas County Hospital, age 84 years, 05 months and sixteen days. On December 01, 1909, near Hamilton, (Greenwood County), she was united in marriage to Rufus Allen Smith and to this union was born one daughte Corinne. Elsie was one of eleven children, three of them dying in infancy. Three brothers, Alfee, Alva and Samuel and four sisters, Daisy Bay, Mattie McCloud and Elma Love have preceded her in death. Elsie was a devoted Christian and a member of the Humeston Methodist Church. She was a faithful worker as long as her health permitted. Being arthritic, the pain she endured was not known to those around her because she always managed to radiate a cheerful disposition, never complaining and constantly thinking of others. One of her cherished hobbies was letter writing, corresponding with relatives and friends. She was missed far and near when she became unable to carry on this work. The following poem was found in her Bible and was written by a former minister's wife who was a very dear friend of hers. "Like the glow and warmth of a candle, Like the joy of a wonderful light That brightens the shadow of evening... And shines through the darkness of night. Your friendship has cheered me so often, And lightened my path on life's way, No wonder I cherish it dearly And treasure you more every day." Mrs. Clara Booth She leaves to mourn her loss her daughter, Corinne, son-in-law, Lyell Engel, two grandsons, Donald and wife, Sharon, twin daughters, Lisa and Lana of Sibley, Iowa. and Ronald and his wife, Linda, and children, Conrad and Andrea Sue of Lincoln, Nebraska. Another favorite poem found in her Bible was entitled, "Others." Lord, help me to live from day to day, In such a self-forgetful way, That even when I kneel to pray My prayer will be for others. Help me in all the work I do To ever be sincere and true; And know that all I do for Thee Must be done for others. Let self be crucified and slain, And burned deep, and all in vain May efforts be to rise again, Unless to live for others. Others, Lord, yes others, Let this my motto be. Help me to live for others, That I may live like Thee. Funeral services were held January 23, 1975, from the Humeston Methodist Church with Reverend Clifford Haider officiating. Organ selections, "Beyond the Sunset," "In the Garden," and "The Old Rugged Cross" were furnished by Jane Haider and "How Great Thou Art" by the congregation. Pallbears were Hoyt Snyder, Kenneth Vandell, Warren Mitchell, Gerald Sponsler, Jerry D'Attillio and Kenneth Surbaugh. Burial was in the Humeston Cemetery beside the body of her husband. (Obituary from the HUMESTON NEW ERA.)
