First settlement made May 3, 1843 by A.J. McNabb and T.J. Hicklin. First furrow plowed by McNabb Early settlers, Maxon Randall, John Hastey, Jacob Kinsler First marriage, Robert Munn and Susan Pence History of the discovery of coal--The first coal mine in this region was discovered about the year 1875 by a Frenchman named Atwood. It was his intention to keep the discovery a secret until he was able to buy the land, but death came to interfere with his plans. On his deathbed he revealed the secret to a friend, but the description of the land which he gave was so inaccurate that the coal could not be found until some time later. The land where it was located, section 12, was bought by Maxon Randall and sold to J.A. Dunn, who discovered the coal by accident.
The following was told to Mary L. Mann Philpot by Susan's daughter, Eunice Coy (excerpts taken from HISTORY OF KIOWA, by Jean M. Brown):
"Robert and Susan Mann left Missouri in 1876 by covered wagons, with seven children and families. They were joined by the Taylor family of Sedalia and other Missourians. The Taylor's in Greenwood County, near Eureka, Kansas. Some of the Manns went on to Elk County near Howard, Kansas. Robert and Susan, with sons William and Robert and young Henrietta, went on to Barber County with John and Martha and their four children to claim land. At that time the settlers lived in dugouts or soddies. Buffalo chips were the main source of fuel until coal came in by rail a few years later." "The first white settlers had arrived only four years earlier in 1872. barber county was named after Thomas barber who was shot by Pro-slavery men. The county was organized in 1874 with about half of the required 600 residents. The name was mistakenly spelled Barbour until corrected by legislation in 1883. Medicine Lodge was designated the county seat February 27, 1876." "There were problems with Indian raids in the first few years, but by 1876 most of the Indians had left the area. There were lots of cattle ranches in the Cherokee outlet in Oklahoma and the cattle from there and Texas were driven through the area to the Wichita market. Kiowa became a major railhead after the railroad came through." "John J. had some cattle and while on a cattle run in 1878 Martha gave birth to their fifth child, Susan, near Wichita, Kansas. In 1880 they decided to return to Missouri. Two more children were born there - George in 1881 and Sara Mae in 1883. Sara Mae died with croup while young."
