All were good workers and builders to help better their families. Never did any member go to prison or cause trouble for the law men. There were farmers, blacksmiths, teachers, musicians, soldiers, mechanics, carpenters, nurses, homemakers, preachers, oil field workers, butchers, Sunday school teachers, dentists, doctors, and good neighbors helping those in need. Almost some of the MANN people are in all of the United States of America. Ruth Mann Parten BIOGRAPHY: A Letter from Ruth Mann Parten: The Taylor and Mann families lived about one mile apart. They brought all of their family members to Kansas in 1876. At the time Eureka was a big town then. There was a courthouse, a wheat and corn mill and several people took land claims and lived on them. It was a requirement to plant a row of trees on the farm. My father and his brothers went to Barber County to claim a farm, they lived one year on the claim. The Barber County claim was not close to town. Wichita(Sedgwick County) was the nearest and it took about a week to get supplies then. They came back to near Piedmont, Kansas were the farmed the ground. They moved to a farm one mile north of Eureka. They lived their and farmed the section of land for twenty years. During those years eight children were born. They moved about half a mile west where one son Homer was born. later they moved about twelve miles east of Eureka. I was born on that farm. Father had mules, horses, and farm work for sale. When I was two years old, his eyes had cataracts and he had them removed. Later he went completely blind. I went with him around the fields and helped the three youngest sons to farm. I don't think a day went by when he wouldn't say, "If I could only see". He pulled weeds from the feel of them in the potato patch. I was with him a lot of the time. During those years, the families married and moved away. Leaving two sons Glenn and Homer with me at home. Father died July 11, 1920 from a heart attack. We stayed on the farm five miles northeast of Eureka for twelve years. Then in 1926 mother, Homer and I moved to the same house where they had lived for twenty years, one mile north of Eureka for three years. I was married in 1928 and Homer was married in 1929. They moved to Eureka and later went to California. I lived in the Flint Hills area twenty miles north of Eureka for ten years where my family was born. We moved to Barton County then. My husband Carl Parten worked in the oil fields for almost forty years. We lived in the Beaver area for thirty five years. I am still here in the same place(38 years).
