C. and Mary Jane Edney Smith, was born near Latham, Cowley County, Kansas, on December 28, 1885 and passed away on May 06, 1958, at his home in Humeston, Iowa at the age of 72 years, 04 months and 08 days. When a young man he moved to Greenwood County, Kansas, where he was engaged in farming. In 1911 he moved to a farm near Humeston, Iowa, and spent the remainder of his life in or near the Humeston (Wayne County) vicinity. On December 01, 1909, he was united in marriage to Elsie Williams. To this union was born one child, (Masil Corinne). He was one of 15 children. His parents, seven sisters and three brothers preceded him in death. He leaves to mourn his passing his faithful wife, Elsie, one daughter, Corinne Engel, one son-in-law, Lyell H. Engel, and two grandsons, Donald and Ronald Engel, all of Humeston, Wayne County, Iowa. Also his four sisters, Mrs. Ruth Pickens of Cambridge, (Cowley County), Kansas; Mrs. George Rowe of Cherryvale, (Montgomery County), Kansas;Mrs. Augusta Gillespie and Mrs. Vesta Yianakopolous pf Winfield, (Cowley county), Kansas, and many relatives and friends. He was a member of the Methodist Church and remained a faithful member until the time of his death. For two years he suffered severely and bore his afflictions without complaint. Funeral services were held Thursday, May 08, 1958 at 2:00pm at the Methodist Church with Reverend Raymond G. Walker officiating. Pallbearers were: Howard Moore, Gerald Sponsler, Harold Gillenwater, Gerald Graham, Frank Nickel and Kenneth Surbaugh. Music was furnished by Gilbert Garton accompanied by Mrs. Otha Kinnear. Interment was in Humeston Cemetery. XXXXXXXXXXXXX RITES THURSDAY FOR RUFUS A. SMITH Services for Rufus A. Smith, 72, are being held Thursday, May 08, 1958, 2:00pm at the Methodist Church by the Rev. R. G. Walker. Interment in the Humeston Cemetery. Mr. Smith, a retired farmer, died Tuesday at his home here following a lengthy ilness during which he was hospitalized much of the time. Survivors include his wife, elsie; one daughter, Mrs. Corinne Engel; her husband, Lyell Engel, and their sons, Donald and Ronald; also four sisters, Mrs. Ruth Pickens, Cambridge, Kansas; Mrs. Mae Rowe, Cherryval Kansas; Mrs. Augusta Gillespie and Mrs. Vesta Yianakopolous of Winfield, Kansas; one brother, John M. Smith of blue Mound, Kansas. Those from out of town attending funeral services on Thursday May 8th, for Rufus A. Smith were: Mrs. Clair Boos, Mr. Clarence Boos from Hastings, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Walter Engel of LuVerne, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. L. FD. Curran and Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Kinney of Des Moines; Mr. and Mrs. Oren E. Bay and Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Marsengill of Lineville; Mr. and Mr Carl Coffee of Leon; Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Williams of Promise City; Mr. a Mrs. Jerry Lee Williams and Mrs. Bill Smith of Corydon; Mr. and Mrs. Gl Williams, Jr. and Gilbert Garton of Chariton; Mr. and Mrs. Warren Mitchell of Derby. The Garden Grove School faculty; Mr. and Mrs. Newton Coffee, Mr. and Mrs. Mardis Coffee, Perry Latta, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Flora and Mr. and Mrs. Dean Williams.
