OBITUARY-- Mrs. Frances Fee Sarah Frances Taylor, daughter of Nathaniel C. and Lucy Ann Taylor, was born at Sedalia, Missouri, May 6, 1873, and departed this life at her home Sunday morning February 7, 1954, at the age of 80 years, nine months and one day. When she was three years old, she came to Kansas with her parents, two brothers and four sisters in a covered wagon and settled on a claim four miles north of Piedmont, where the family lived and improved their claim. Just two years after filing their claim, both parents, two brothers and one sister died of typhoid fever within a period of two months time, leaving her an orphan at the age of eight. After this childhood tragedy, she, four sisters and one brother made their home with various friends and neighbors. About 1888 the Frisco railroad was being built and the town of Piedmont established. At that time she worked in the hotel, where she met George W. Fee, who was in the service of the railroad. They were married May 24, 1890. To this union were born two sons and four daughters: Gerland Fee of Portland, Oregon; Mrs. Edna Adams of Howard; Frank Lee of Hutchinson; Mrs. Ruby Bland, Mrs. Thelma Lilley and Mrs. Margaret Lilley of Piedmont, all of whom survive her. Mrs. Fee led an active and useful life to the day of her death. She was endeared and loved by all who came to know her. She lived in this community for the past 77 years and is probably one of the oldest residents in this area. During early and middle age she was active in the work of the Methodist church and for many years was a Sunday School teacher. She had a part in the building of the original Methodist Church, which was destroyed by fire in 1900, and also was active in the building of the present structure. She is a charter member of this church. She was a great lover of flowers and during her early and middle life, ? as long as she was active, her home and yard was a symphony of bloom which she shared with her friends and neighbors. Her flower offerings have helped to make a beautiful and happy many church affairs, commencements and Memorial days. Although she was in very frail health, Mrs. Fee's passing shocked and saddened the community by her sudden death. Hers was truly that great noble pioneer spirit that practiced thrift, rose above hardship, trusted in God and possessed understanding and quiet patience. In addition to her six children, she is survived by one sister, Mrs. Edna Doughty of Piedmont, the last member of the Taylor family; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Vessie Taylor of Tishomingo, Okla.; fifteen grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and a host of friends. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, February 11, from the Piedmont Methodist church by the Rev. Austin McGhee. Soloist was Mrs. Leslie Mack and the accompanist was Mrs. Bill Garner. Pall bearers were six of her nephews: Ralph Taylor, Ada, Okla.; Frank Miller, Ed Miller, Severy; Mirrel Doughty, Eureka; Russell Doughty, Wichita; Melvin Doughty, Howard. Mrs. Fee was laid to rest beside her husband who preceded her in death July 12, 1930. This cemetery was established in her early youth, and she has personally known most of the people who share the hillside slope. Another pioneer of this area has gone Home and rests in the place she loved.
