Badly wounded, he was discharged as a Lance-Corporal on June 21, 1915, and deemed no longer physically fit for war service. After the war, he moved to Leicester, where he was employed as a labourer. Having married Nellie, they initially lived at 19, Green Street, Leicester. However, they later moved to 234, Park Road, Loughborough, where he was employed as an engineers maintenance painter at the Brush Falcon Works.
