Notes
a. Note:   lized this week when we called on our friend and neighbor, Mrs. Emma Hoog. We had exchanged visits but this time we wanted to get some details of her family and her early life because our home was her birthplace and home. It was built by Emma's father, Xavier Schmitt. Emma was one of a family of 12. Her mother was Katherine Mangold, the second child born in Castroville. Xavier came over as a young boy and later served in the Civil War. He developed into one of Castroville's finest artisans and built half a dozen houses around us. The attic in our home, "the Xavier Schmitt House", is built from slabs of trees taken from the river bank and held together by square nails. The limestone rocks were hauled from Rio Medina and the lime to mortar the rocks was burned in kilns along the river bank. In early days the logs were floated down the river or pulled by oxen along the bank. Right now we feel as if a few more days of rain and we can get out the oxen and start hauling again. The friendly Indians brought the Schmitts game and took Emma's mother horseback riding. Emma studied piano with the Sisters of Divine Providence around 1890 and her brother was church organist for 25 years at St. Louis. Their father played a "mean" accordion, although self-taught. Emma has ten of her twelve children living, one a Sister of Divine Providence, Sister Alberta, Constable Joe, and Tommy and Francis in Florida, Katherine (Mrs. Floyd) Tondre, Albert Jr., in Corpus Christi, Councilman Raymond Hoog, Mrs. Mary (Jack) Ulbrich Jr., Robert and Joan. And so with something old in the settlers and something new in the graduates, we bring this to a close with 'bye now, hasta la vista, au voir, und auf wiedersehen'.
