Notes
a. Note:   A schedule of records of births for Jackson county for the year 1858 has James Cain as son of William Cain and Elizabeth Parton, which is not in keeping with other records pertaining to the family of William Cain in Jackson county o
Note:   f this time period. Upon further study of the page listing the births for Jackson county in 1858, a major error was found in entries 5-11. By comparing the 1860 census from Jackson county with the records of the 1858 births the following was discovered:
Entry 1 - Elizabeth McQueen, b 15 March 1585, da. of John McQueen and Rachel Sparks - this is correct per the 1860 census
Entry 2 - Elizabeth Portwood, b 8 March 1585, da. of William Hardin Portwood and Maria Louisa Brandonburg - this is correct per the 1860 census
Entry 3 - Balina Sparks, b 3 October 1585, da. of Barnett Sparks and Mary Muck - this is correct per the 1860 census
Entry 4 - Jane Lakes, b 25 Jul 1858, da. of Merrill Lakes and Matilda Gabbard - this is correct per the 1860 census
Entry 5 - Louisa Lakes, b 1 March 1858, da of William Lakes and Jane Fowler - could not find a entry in 1860 for this family
Entry 6 - William Wilder, b 15 Jan 1858, s of Henry Wilder and Nancy Hunt - this is where mistakes begin in the register - the 1860 census shows his mother as Mary
Entry 7 - Malinda Tincher, b Nov 1858, da. of James Tincher and Margaret Ann Pigg - her mother is Nancy Hunt from the previous record - per the 1860 census
Entry 8 - Mary Jane Isaacks, b 23 Mar 1858, da of C M Isaacks and Mary Gray - her mother is Margaret Ann Pigg from the previous record - per the 1860 census
Entry 9 - James McKiney Cain, b 2 Nov 1858, s of William Cain and Elizabeth Parton - his mother is Mary Gray from the previous record - per the 1860 census
Entry 10 - William (Wilson) Hurst, b 5 Feb 1858, s. of Allen Hurst and Eliander Baker - his mother is Elizabeth Parton from the previous record - per the 1860 census
Entry 11 - Lucinda Baker, b 17 Feb 1858, da. of Enoch Baker - no mother listed - her mother is Eliander from the previous record - per the 1860 census.
It looks as though when the entries were compiled in the book, Mary was not entered as the mother for William Wilder - Nancy Hunt was, throwing off the next 5 entries, which was not corrected until entry 12 for Clay Burnett, who has no father listed (illegitimate?), only his mother Mary Ann Burnett. From this point on the register seems to correct itself.
William Cain was never married to a woman named Elizabeth Parton. The Elizabeth Parton/Partin mentioned in the above record was married to Allen Hurst and she was born c 1813. This was verified by an earlier entry for a daughter, Amanda, born to Elizabeth Parton and Allen Hurst in 1854 along with the 1860 census. The 1860 census, Jackson county, shows William Cain, his wife Mary Ann, children, Elizabeth 3 years old and James M 1 year old. Elizabeth's death record shows that her mother's maiden name was Grey, as well as the death records of Martha and Nancy Cain, their younger sisters who appear with them in the 1870 census for Jackson County.
  ____________________________
James Cain moved to Estancia, New Mexico after 1910 (about 1916). Located Southeast of Albuquerque, NM. He ran a hotel (Probably called the Valley Hotel) and bought a "Bean" Ranch.
The twins (Mattie and Lily) and Tommy eventually moved to California when they were adult. Thomas worked for the railroad in California and los a leg in a train accident.
James Cain was listed in the 1910 Lee County, KY. census as a store owner and retail merchant. He also ran a stave mill on the Kentucky River.
James was listed in the 1920 Torrance County, NM census as a hotel keeper in the city of Estancia.
James M. Cain was living in Estill County, KY. in 1891 as the marriage records of Estill County list William Cain, Jr. married Syntha Ann Cain 12-10-1891 in the home of James M. Cain. (William Cain, Jr. was James' brother.
James was living in Lee County, KY. in 1910 as he appears in the 1910 census with 2nd wife, Margaret, and chidren , Tommy, Mattie and Lily.
The 1910 Lee County, Kentucky Census list James as having been married twice. His wife is listed as Margaret. The 1900 Estill County, Kentucky census list James wife as Sarah M. and having been married 11 years. From information provided by Sarah Catherine Cain, Margaret was stepmother to Sarah and her siblings.
James M. Cain was known by nickname "Kenney".
