Note: Was living with Joseph Clark Williams in Cass Minnesota in 1895. _____________________________________ Betty Williams married James "Scrubb" Ashcraft, 29 Oct 1890. Prior to her marriage to Scrubb, she bore a son Charles Henry Williams out of wedlock. At the time of the 1910 Census, Charlie and his family was living next to his grandmother Mary Williams, then a widow, and his uncle George (who according to the census was disabled). It is unknown for sure who the father of Charles Henry Williams was. Family tradition maintains that when Charlie's mom married Scrubb Ashcraft, Charlie left Kentucky to go live with his "Uncle Joe Clark Williams." The 1895 Minnesota census would support this story. Joseph Williams had the following sons in the 1880 Census - Dillard (10), Lewis (8), Palestine (6), Charlie (5), and Matt (9 m). By the 1895 census in Cass, Minnesota, Joseph had Palestine (20), Charlie (19), Matt (15), Henry (19), Frank (11), Richard J (5) with Lewis (22) living next door. Dillard seems to have remained in Kentucky. By the 1900 census Joseph was still in Cass, Minnesota with his sons Lewis (27), Matt (20), Frank (16), Richard (10) and George (5). It would seem that the Henry that was in the 1895 census was Charles Henry Williams, which would be in keeping with the family stories that Charlie left Kentucky at the end of 1890 when his mother married Scrub Ashcraft and returned to Kentucky prior to his marriage to Sarah Cain in 1902. It is certain that Hallie Ashcraft Baker and Charles Henry Williams were half brother and sister. Charlie Williams' children referred to her as "Aunt Hallie". My father recalls the drowning death of Hallie Ashcraft Baker's son Raymond. According to the 1870 Census Martin Williams and his family including daughter Mary Elizabeth were living next door to the Williams family headed by Emeline "Emily" Williams. This family included sons Joseph Clark and Jesse. In 1880 Jesse was still in the household of his mother and his grandmother Margaret and George Martin Williams and his family are no longer in the same district of Estill. By the 1900 census Jesse has had 4 children. Minnie, Arthur, James, and Robert, all born between 1881 and 1891, mother unknown. Jesse has also married the widow Louisa Brinegar and her son George Allen is living with them. By the 1910 census, Jesse was a boarder in the house of Noah Puckett. Death certificate for Jesse Williams has his death in Lexington at the age of 66 due to a cerebral embolism. He was interred in Estill county. At the time of his death he was a widower. Given all the actual facts of this time combined with the family stories, it would seem that Jesse Williams brother to Joseph Clark Williams is the likely father of Charles Henry Williams. _____________________________________- Charles Henry Williams b. ca. 1877 On Kentucky River between Evelyn and Irvine, Kentucky Charles had uncles: Robert Williams Robert's children: Robert (Bob) Hazel Lived at Irvine or Hiedleburg, KY Dillard Williams (Store owner) aunt: Kate WILLIAMS Lynch From the 1910 and 1900 Estill County census; Lynch, Hiram age 34, b.
