Text:   Documents from F.J.'s widow's application for Civil War Veterans' pension benefits show 1855 in one place, and 1856 in another place. At any rate, they were married by Father Leo in the St. Lawrence Church at New Hamburg, MO. 1856 is mentioned in the 1900 census from Sylvannia township, Scott county, MO. On the other hand, her son George is mentioned there as being born in June, 1856, which would point towards the 1855 date.

Notes
a. Note:   own ancestry in Alsace. However, LDS Family History Center computers show a number of F.J. Kieffers from Benfeld and Hindisheim, Bas-Rhin, in the decades before his birth. He likely is related to one of them. A likely possibility of this might be: Francois Josef Kieffer was born April 18, 1780 in Hindisheim. He married Elisabeth Reibel (born 1782 in Hindisheim to Caspar and Madeline Issenhart), and they had a son named Francois Josef Kieffer, who died as a baby. Parents often named a later child the same name; F.J. could well have been the second F.J. attempted by these people. F.J. joined Company B as a Private in the Scott County Battalion of the Missouri Homeguard on May 5, 1861, and served until August 5 of the same year, according to documents from his widow's application for pension benefits. Here's why: The 1870 census shows a Frederick Moder living in Logansport, IN, who was born c. 1830 in Darmstadt. It would seem likely that this is Daniel's older brother. This Frederick named his first son Frederick as well. Daniel named his first son Frederick. So, this branch of Moeders seem to name their first son "Frederick". It would make sense that Frederick Moder was the first son of a Frederick Moeder, only with an Americanized spelling. erm from the southeRCurrently living in Ft.
