On September 28, 1812, while Barnabas and Hannah were away from home, supposedly Indians stole their pewter dishes and set fire to their cabin. Undaunted, Hannah established kitchen in a hollow sycamore stub, from which she served refreshments during the building of their new log house. She used fresh white ash chips for plates and the handleless knives and forks raked from the ruins.
