Notes
a. Note:   Shirley married a Nancy Fowler, 6 April 1818 in Clark County, Indianaand they removed to Floyd County, Indiana, where Nancy bore him twochildren: Preston Raymond Shirley in 1826, and Charlotte AmandaShirley in 1828. John Shirley divorced Nancy shortly afterward and on15 May 1829 he married a Fannie Munnick in Floyd County, Indiana (nochildren from this union). He also divorced Fannie and married (dateand place unknown) teen-aged Elizabeth "Eliza" Hatfield, related tothe feuding Hatfields of West-Virginia-Kentucky. In 1839 they removedto southwestern Missouri.
There is a marriage record for a John Shirley and a Nancy Fowler, BookA, page 21, 6 April 1818 -- Clark County, Indiana Marriages,1808-1897. FHL film#0549314.

If John Shirley divorced his first two wives, I have not found therecords. Shirley is the only source claiming that the mother of MyraBelle Shirley's maiden name was Hatfield. The marriage record saysPennington and that is the name given in Phillip W. Steele's "StarrTracks: Belle and Pearl Starr. Author Shirley gives no citation forhis source of the martial record of John Shirley.
