 1861 census, Newport Pagnell, England:
Joseph Burgess, Head, 28, Baker Master
Sarah Burgess, wife, 29 -- place of birth not given
 Elizabeth Burgess, dau, age 6
 --------
Emigrated to USA in 1869 when daughter Elizabeth was 14 and son Charles was seven. (Obit is in error when it gives 1852 as emigration date; 1900 census gives 1869 as emigration date for both Joseph and daughter Elizabeth Barr)
Death certificate (filled out by his son in law George Barr) lists Joseph's mother as Elizabeth Pickering but this is an error, for the Methodist church records of England list Joseph's mother as Ann Crowley.
Died in Berkshire NY and buried in Allentown Cemetery, Maine, NY, beside his first wife.

Obituary from the Owego Gazette, Berkshire Notes, May 31, 1917:
Death of Joseph Burgess: Joseph Burgess was born at Newport, Buckinham county, England, Jan. 4th, 1832, and died at his home in Berkshire, NY, May 27, 1917. He was one of six sons born to William and Elizabeth [sic] Burgess. Four of these sons became ministers of the gospel, one being Rev.Thomas Burgess, who was a member of the Wyoming Conference until his death in 1911. All of these boys excepting one, were total abstainers. Mr. Burgess attributed his long life and excellent health to his strict temperance principles. He never used tobacco or liquor in any form. When a young lad he was apprenticed out and learned the painter's trade. He could do excellent work up to the last year of his life. In 1853 he married Sarah Petit. Four children were born to them; two died in infancy, Elizabeth, wife of Geo. Barr, being the only survivor. Charles, the son, became a missionary and was sent to Turkey. His health failed and he was obliged to return to the United States. He then went to Colorado to see if the change might do him some good, but he gradually failed until he died.
In 1852 [sic] Joseph Burgess with his family came to the United States. His wife died a few years later. His second wife, who survives him was Caroline Barr. When a boy he was converted and joined the Wesleyan Methodist Church, but after coming to the United States he joined the Methodist Episcopal Church. He had been a resident of this town over thirty years and his genial ways won him friends everywhere. He loved the church and was one of the most faithful workers until he became too feeble to attend regularly. Many times during his last illness he expressed the wish to go "home" and was ready as soon as God called him. His funeral was held at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Geo. Barr, on Wednesday at 10 o'clock, Rev. G. R. Savige officiating and his body was laid at rest in the cemetery at Allentown, near the town of Maine, in the family plot. Truly it can be said, "Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord." He is survived by his aged wife and one daughter, Mrs. Geo. Barr.
