Ludwig Ferdinand may have gone to New Orleans to work in the banking and mercantile ventures of his uncles Michel and Armand Heine. It is possible that he met his wife in New Orleans, when her father was pastoring the Prytania Street Presbyterian Church of that city.
By 1863 Ludwig Ferdinand was in New York City as shown by his marriage and the following listings in Trow's New York City Directory:
 1863: Hertz, Ferdinand, mer. 87 Wall, home 47 E. 30th
 1864: Hertz, Ferdinand, mer. 87 Wall, home 47 E. 30th
 1865: Hertz, Ferdinand, mer.131 Pearl, home 47 E. 30th
 1866: Hertz, Ferdinand and Co., , mers. 58 Beaver, home 47 E. 30th
(Herman Hertz in 1866 is also listed as Mer., 58 Beaver, home 47 E. 30th, NY City, with the same business and home address as his brother Ferdinand)
Ludwig Ferdinand and Mary Ann were married in New York by the bride's father, Rev. Isaac James Henderson. (Source: Family Bible and family letters). Although Rev. Henderson had been quite ill and unable to use his voice for some time, he regained the use of his voice in time to perform the ceremony. The groom's parents (Gustav and Anna) sent a hand-carved walnut china closet to the couple as a wedding gift. This was passed down to Harriet Howard. The Hendersons gave the couple a large family Bible; this is presently in the possession of John Burgess. The bride and groom cut the cake with an engraved silver knife which has been used for family weddings ever since, for at least five generations.
Ludwig Ferdinand and his family traveled back and forth between New York and Germany, as revealed by the places of birth of his children as well as by family letters. Anna Hertz remembered visiting her grandparents in Germany in 1873 (when she was six). She recalled the high French windows of the Hamburg home, with rain beating against them constantly. She also remembered the dramatized "Snow White" where all the actors were children.
The Hertz residence in Brooklyn was first at St. James Place and then on Skillman Street. Family papers show that they attended the Classon Ave. Presbyterian Church in New York City, the Rev. Dr. Jospeh Duryea being pastor when their daughter Anna united with the church.
In 1875 Ludwig Ferdinand was in Europe at a sanitarium while his family remained in Annapolis, MD, with his wife's parents. Source: Nov. 23, 1937 letter from Anna Hertz Burgess to her son Paul (a great grandson of Isaac James Henderson):
"The winter when your great grandfather died, when your grandfather [Ludwig Ferdinand Hertz] was in Europe at a sanitarium, when Uncle Albion could not get his salary because Grant refused to sign the naval appropriation bill, when Aunt Susie Wyckoff was in an asylum and Uncle Barkley was ill with tuberculosis, and personally, I had malaria fever, was rather a dreadful time. I played with the Rideout children after my recovery and the whole winter has come back vividly as I looked at the picture . .. things are rather dismal for the nation and the world today but here I am nearly 71 and surely in comfortable surroundings with children and granchildren, an unbroken family, all followers of our Lord. Praise God from whom all blessings flow."
Ludwig Ferdinand Hertz suffered ill health for many years. In view of his poor health, his uncles Armand and Michel Heine paid for life insurance policies for him. A letter dated Feb. 18, 1878 from an intermediary., and sent to Mrs. Mary Hertz, 230 St. James Place, Brooklyn, states:
Madame, Referring to the request made in yours of Feb. 6th as to the payments of premiums on Policies on the life of Ferdinand Hertz, we beg now to notify you that we have this day received informations from Mssrs. Heine Paris to pay to their debit the premiums named by you and also an additional one due May 19th. [There follows a list of three insurance policies totalling $35,000.] We make entries in our diary accordingingly, and conform to said instructions in due time, [unclear word] Heine request as to have the receipts at your disposal.
