a. Note:   1837. After his mother Susannah died (about 1839) Jonas his father was contracted to build a grist mill on Big White Oak Creek, near Truittsville, Greenup Co. Ky. Jonas built the mill for Dr.Samuel Truitt. Samuel Truitt had a daughter Mildred whom married Jonas. David was about 12 years old at this time. Some time between 1848 and 1859 David left KY. and moved back to Tazewell Co. Va. There he married Arminda Robinett in 1859. David served in the Confederate Army Co H 29th Va. Infantry (Known as the Bloody 29th after the Battle of Cold Harbor) His Captain was Ebenezer Brewster, His General was General Corse. Pickets Division, Longstreets 1st Corps. General Robert E. Lees Army of Northern Virginia. He was captured in the evening of April 8, 1865 near Farmville, Va. the day before Lee Surrendered. David was in the Prisoner of war Pen (arriving April 14, 1865 at Point Lookout, Md.) Crockett was released June 22, 1865. David Crockett Whitt wrote a letter from Point Lookout to his father Jonas Whitt in Greenup County, Kentucky on 30 May 1865 asking him to work to free him and 5 of his friends. Jonas died 33 days after Crockett wrote it. ( 12,285 confederates were taken to point Lookout in the month of April 1865) (18,580 confederates released in the month of June 1865) David came home to Tazewell, and Russell Counties VA. and resumed his life as a farmer, and miller. It was hard during the recovery years. It was passed down by word of mouth that David swam the Ohio River on his way home from the war, I beleive He may have swam the Potomac. He may have swam the Ohio while he lived in Greenup County Ky. or when he left Ky. David is my Great Grand Father. His son Charles Henry is my Grand Father. My father Marvin B. Whitt Born 1913 related a story to me that Crockett came back to Va. because of some trouble he was in, Marvin stated that Crockett got into a fight with some man and hurt him so bad that he thought he killed him, rumor was the man got better! 1880 Census, Russell County VA. David C. Whitt Born Dec 1836, Armenda Wife Born May 1844; John F. 19; Jonas Lee 17; Margaret 13; James C. 11; Mary F.07; William 05; Milburn 01; Charles Henry not listed because he was not born until Sep. 1881. David Crockett Whitt and Arminda bought a farm on Swords Creek, Russell County, VA. in 1899 from Arminda's brother, Silas H. Robinett and his wife Elizabeth. The sum paid was $216.50 in hand for 20 & 52/100 Acres. Deal closed 3 Oct 1899 Justice of the peace over seeing contract was Jonathon Boyd. In the 1860 Census Cedar Bluff, Tazewell County VA.
