a. Note:   difficult childhood. His mother died when he was around 6 years old. He was the 4th of five children. His father Charles Henry Whitt remarried quickly to a young woman, Lillar Lee Simmons. They had 5 more children. Marvin took an adventure trip to Michigan when he was about 21 years of age. This trip was to find work during the great depression. He Ho-boed trains and did odd jobs to earn his way. After arriving in Michigan he picked fruit and did other odd jobs. He met an Indian who became friends and shared fishing and hunting trips with him. The whole trip was a learning experiance, and enjoyable to Marvin. Marvin tells many stories of this time, one of which was his trip home to Raven, Va. Marvin was Ho-bowing home around Christmas 1934. It was extra cold that year and there was not any box cars on that last train from Williamson, WV to Raven, Va. Marvin was rideing in open coal gondolas. He had a little fire for a while ,but ran out of fuel. Marvin stayed awake all night, fearing to sleep, He was aware that he might freeze to death. He got home about breakfast time. He ate breakfast, and went to bed, He was awaken about supper time, and ask if he wanted to eat, he said he would just sleep, he slept until the next morning about 24 hours all together. Marvin is the best man I know. I never heard him curse, seen him smoke or drink, aways a good husband, father,and provider for his family. He is a devoted Christian. Marvin is a witty person, an intelligent person, and a good example of the Whitt Family! A member of the Virginia State Guard at one time! Marvin made his living as a coal miner,(Certified Mine Foreman and First Aid Man) working in mines in and around Tazewell County for 37 years. Marvin was a Union Member of UMWA Local #7327 Jewell Valley Virginia. Marvin,s last audible words were "Jesus come and get me." After that he relaxed! Reverent David Brannock of the Richlands First United Methodist Church, Richlands, Va. officiated. Dahnmon Whitt said a few words and read the obit. Hurst Scott Funeral Home handled the services. Pallbearers were Matthew Whitt, Charlie Whitt Jr., Jeffrey Whitt, Marvin Larry Whitt, Sean Jarrell, Jake Pittman, and Mike Haun.
