STURGIS Sex: M Marriage(s): Spouse: Mary L. HAYS Marriage: 14 Mar 1861 Tipton, Tennessee Now that I have found you I have started digging into my Sturgis line agin and I found some census records that I received from a Starling cousin that I found the same way as you.(on the web) I had overlooked these records in the package she sent. 1870 census for shelby county TN. has David T. Starling family living in dwelling #27 and Joshua Sturgis family in dwelling#25.(practically next door) Emily Sturgis, age 63 was living with David and Sarah. Jennie, age 30 was also in the house with David and Sarah. I think Jennie was Elizabeth Jane Sturgis. I vaguely remember my grandmother referring to her as aunt Jenny. Aunt Jennie lived with my grandma and Grandpa in Arkansas. She died Jan 12, 1924. Jan 12 is my birthday, coincidentally. 1870 Shelby County Census: Joshua Sturgis --age 33--Farmer--Born in Tennessee Mary---------------------26--keeping house----TN Samuel---------------------6 --male----------------" Oliver----------------------4--male-----------------" Dora------------------------2--female--------------" I also have a hand written page (apparently by a Sturgis family member) that states that Samuel M. Sturgis and Emily Gregory was married. The rest of the page lists the births of all of their children. Any thing to the contrary that you might have found in LDS files is not correct. Mormons make mistakes too. Joshua's father was Samuel McMurray Sturgis and his mother was Emily (Gregory) Sturgis; anything else is wrong. The three different fathers might have been for three different sons. There are several Joshua Sturgis' in that family line. McMurray was Samuel's mother's maiden name, by the way. I have been doing this about four and a half years now. I have been retired for three years so I have time for it now. I, likewise, am totally hooked on genealogy My brother says he has found some more old pictures in his basement that came from grandma's old trunk. Maybe there are some Sturgises in the them. I am going bact to Arkansas in June to visit my brother and sister. I will check out the pictures. I have one picture that might be David Starling and Sarah L. Sturgis, but I'm not sure. I will try to email you a copy of it and see if you can see any family resemblance. It is past my bed time I will see you later. Cousin, David Hi Tina, Your Joshua Lee Sturgis is almost certain to be the brother of my great grandmother. My great grandfather was David Thomas Starling. He married Sarah Louisa Sturgis Apr. 7, 1859 in Shelby County TN. Joshua L. Sturgis b. Apr.18,1839. in Shelby County, TN. David Thomas Starling and Joshua L. Sturgis enlisted in Confederate Army together. David survived but I never knew if Joshua survived. Apparently he did. Joshua's parents were: Samuel McMurray Sturgis: b. before 1800 in York Co. South Carolina, d. ? in Shelby Co. TN. Mother: Emily Gregory: b. ? married Mar. 9, 1835 in Shelby Co. TN. She died Jan 25 1872. Joshua's siblings are: Martha Matilda Sturgis, b. Apr 8, 1836: Elizabeth Jane Sturgis, b. Dec 10 1837, d. Jan 12, 1924 in Cross Bayou, Mississippi Co. AR. (2 miles west of Joiner AR. and directly across the river from Tipton Co. TN.): Sarah Louisa Sturgis (my ggrandmother, b. Oct 14, 1841 in Tennessee, d. Feb. 19, 1920 in Shelby Co. TN.: Mary Narissa Sturgis, b. Aug 11, 1843, d. May 17, 1845. Emily Trissa Sturgis, b. Apr, 19 1845: Samuel M. Sturgis, b. Aug 22, 1847. The documentation for the above is copies of pages in family bible from my grandfather's family. Will be glad to send you photo copies of same. My mother named my brother Albert Gregory Starling . Gregory was for Emily Gregory, Joshua's mother. I was named for David Thomas Starling, Joshua's brother in law and my ggrandfather. The ancestors of Samuel McMurray Sturgis, was taken from the family tree of another Sturgis family on the internet. It is not my research, so I am not sure of its accuracy. It always excites me when I find another lost cousin on the internet. Maybe you and I are cousins. I have found about half a dozen so far. Send me your P.O. address and I will send you copies of all the information I have. Respectfully, David Starling P.O. Box 808 Cedar Ridge, CA. 95924 Tel.# (530) 477-2595 FAX (530) 477-7587 email: [email protected]@gv.net Tina, here is the Civil War site with the info about Joshua and David Starling. Actually they were in two different Cavalry units together: (Logwoods) 15th Rgt. Tennessee Cavalry Co. I, and (Greens) 12th Rgt. Tenn. Cav. David was also in the Infantry for awhile with his two brothers, Robert and Abraham. Joshua was not with them in the infantry. I guess that they might not have enlisted at the same time. It is my guess that the three Starling brothers enlisted at the same time and two of them were killed. David being the survivor managed to get a transfer to the cavalry and joined his brother -in-law, Joshua. The site is managed by the National Park Service and the info. is reliable. Click on "Soldiers and Sailors" then fill in the blank boxes. The list of soldiers in the units is too cumbersome to use unless you click on the "printable exel file". Just download the file and open it on the spot. The dialogue will ask what program you want to open it with. I used Microsoft Word and it worked perfect. Probably any word processor program will work. If you have trouble, let me know and I will send you copies later. http://www2.cr.nps.gov/abpp/civil.htm Ancestry.com has the "World Tree" it has GEDCOMS for everyone in the world. It has Joshua's father and his line all the way back to a man named Zadock Sturgis. I downloaded the GEDCOM today and I will send the family file if you have a problem with the download. I have a new computer and it has a CD/RW/DVD on it and I can burn my own CDs. I need to learn how to use it so I might send the files on CD as well as on paper. I am still transferring my family files to my new computer manually. My old hard drive quit and I didn't have a backup. My brother said that he knows where Joshua's mother is buried. The next time I communicate with him I will ask. He lives in Fayetteville AR. He said she was buried between Little Rock and Memphis but I can't remember the name of the town. Did you look at my Family History page on the Familytreemaker site? Keep in touch, David Hi Tina, I had some more good luck. I found Joshua L. Sturgis in 1900 Tipton Co. TN. census. He is 63 years old wife is Mary , age 55. They have an adult daughter living with them named Lula, age 26. Next door is W.C. Sturgis age 27, with wife Addie and daughter, Della, age 2. If you have a subscription to Ancestry.com it is Civil Dist. #1, Enumeration Dist.# 121 sheet #2 (image #3). For some reason I can't get my printer to print the image; although it is clearly printable: There is an icon to click on to print it. I found it by accident while looking for an ancestor for Joyce Bennett Reynolds. The 1900 Tipton census is not indexed so I will probably have to look at several hundred pages to find her ancestor. Think I will see if he is still alive in 1910. Hope you are having a great summer.
