Rumor has it that the Hooks were horse thieves for most of their growing up lives and that when they got to Florida and on into Texas they settled down. Another rumor was that William Riley's father and his brother were stowaway's on a ship and got caught. It was said that they were sold into servitude in North Carolina. In the Census there is a Negro Moriah with two boys, one named Thomas and one named William. Who knows. The father of William Riley Hooks was born in Scotland. It is not known when the family left Scotland via England for North America. Family tradition has it that they left to avoid the Revolution in the mid 18th century. (1745) They landed in Nova Scotia and it is not known how long they lived there but it is known that William Riley Hooks was born in North Carolina. William and Sarah Jane had two children while living in Alabama. In 1858 they joined a wagon train headed for Texas. The wagon train halted in Mississippi for a baby girl to be born to Sarah Jane. She was named for the four women that assisted in the birth - namely, Gabra, Ella Ann Mariah and called "Gabe". Four children were born after they settled in Texas. Obituary HOOKS, William R. Hooks was born in Robeson County, N.C. August 5, 1811 and died December 16, 1900 in full triumph of the Christian faith, near Crockett, Texas. He was married to Margaret Bowie and to them were given three children. This happy union was severed by her death in 18__. He was again happily married to Sarah J. Stafford in 1851. Of this union nine children were born. Moved to Georgia and Alabama, and to Newton County, Texas 1853. From there he moved to Tyler, then to Houston County, Texas where he lived twenty-five years, almost to the hour. In this he joined the Methodist Episcopal Church, South in which he lived a consistent, devoted, Christian life until God said, "It is enough; come up higher." His last days were days of afflictions but he bore them as only a true soldier of the cross can, and then went victoriously home to Heaven. Truly a father in Israel has passed away, having spent more than four-score years in the services of God and the Church he loved so dearly. He leaves an aged companion, with eight of their nine children, to mourn their loss. A good man, devoted husband and father has left us. Our loss is his eternal gain. Weep not, dear friends. We will meet him in the sweet by and by where partings will never come. W.S. EASTERLING, Pastor. TEXAS CHRISTIAN ADVOCATE August 8, 1912 HOOKS - Sarah Jane Hooks (Stafford) was born December 10, 1831 near Key West Florida; died June 7, 1912, near Crockett, Texas. She moved to Henry County, Alabama, when a girl; married William R. Hooks, September 11, 1851; moved to Texas. 1858. She was the mother of nine children, four boys and five girls, all living except one daughter, who was waiting for her in Heaven. She was converted and joined the M.E. Church, South, when young, and ever lived a worthy member all her life. All who knew her loved her, for she loved us all. The writer formed her acquaintance thirty years ago, and was impressed with her as a fine young woman and a good mother and Christian. She was a great sufferer the last two years of her life. She often spoke of her Lord as her help and never murmured at her condition. She was submissive and never complained. It is enough that she served her day and generation and fell on sleep, leaving the heritage of a good life. God bless her children and help them to meet her with God's children in the other world. Notes for WILLIAM MURDOCH HOOKS: William was a farmer and worked for Mobil Oil as a machinist, until he retired in 1961. He was a member of the Methodist Church and a member of American Petro Chemical Union in Beaumont, Texas. Notes for LENA PEARL BAKER: Rev. G.W. Self married Lena Pearl Baker and William Murdoch Hooks. The witnesses at the wedding were John Partin and Cassie Russell. In the 1920 census Lena and William Murdoch Hooks are 23 years old. William and Lena Pearl had 5 children. One girl and 4 boys. Their daughter Hazel LaVern came home one day and stated she had seen an angel and passed away shortly thereafter. She had heart problems from birth. Van Gordon died of Diphtheria and William Bryant almost died from the same deadly disease. In 1940 they moved to live with Pearl's mother after Oscar her husband died. After living with Ella for awhile; Ella came out to the barn and made accusations that Murdoch had stolen some of her corn. Murdoch went into a rage and moved the family to Etol where they were share croppers for E.O. Lowery. They then moved to Nat Community again and lived on Oren Baker's place and workers for the son of David and Holly Birdwell again as sharecroppers. Murdoch got a job with Magnolia Oil Refig in Beaumont, Texas. The family moved to Vidor and were living there when Franklin D. Roosevelt died. They then purchased a place from George Partin who was married to Edna Hooks 3 1/2 miles from Cushing called Flower Mountain. Pearl lived on Flower Mountain after Murdoch left her and the boys and remained there until she moved to Houston where her son Gerald lived. She lived next door to his family and at times with them until they moved to Palestine. She remained in their home for awhile and then purchased herself a mobile home. She lived in her home next to Gerald until she could no longer take care of herself. Harold came and moved her to Lufkin where she remained in a nursing home until her death. GERALD DEAN4 HOOKS (WILLIAM MURDOCH3, WILLIAM BRYANT2, WILLIAM RILEY1) was born March 15, 1933 in Nacogdoches County, Texas. He married (1) LAVONNE JACKSON in Alto, Texas. He married (2) FRANCES EVELYN FENTON June 23, 1953 in Cushing, Texas, daughter of ALBERT FENTON and SUSAN MASON. She was born February 21, 1936 in Nacogdoches, County, Texas, and died August 01, 1998 in Lufkin, Texas. More About GERALD HOOKS and LAVONNE JACKSON: Marriage: Alto, Texas Notes for FRANCES EVELYN FENTON: Evelyn married Gerald Hooks June 23, 1953. Gerald went to the Army and Debra was born the same day he was put on a train with soldiers and shipped out to Japan. It was 18 months before he would return home to see his new daughter. Evelyn lived with her parents during this time. After Gerald came home from the Army Gary was born on May 20, 1957. They moved to Houston, Texas and Gerald worked there selling Fuller Brush. He said he would get all hiped up by taking the brush and rubbing it on his clothes then he would walk in and tell how good that brush was. He sold more brushes than anyone because he would get so excited about that brush. They told the story about the first time they had Shipley Donuts, they bought a box and took them home and thought that was the best thing they had every tasted. Gerald went to work for the telephone company and they lived in Flagstaff, Arizona, Phoenix, Arizona and then moved to California for awhile. Gerald and Evelyn moved back to Houston, Texas and Gordon was born May 22, 1962. Gerald worked several jobs and finally landed a job for A.O. Smith. He enjoyed his job there and they moved from Cloverleaf to North Shore and bought several houses to rent out. They were doing pretty good. The family enjoyed vacations together. In December, 1971 they moved to Palestine, Texas where Gerald went to work for the phone company. They built a mobile home park on North Jackson Street and to this day in 2002 it still exists, under new ownership. In 1979 they moved to Neches, Texas where they built a log home themselves. While living in Neches their first Grandson was born in 1980. Donald (Debbie's son) was the apple of his Mimi's eye. Gerald wanted to be called Grandpa and Evelyn wanted to be called Grandma, Donald named them "Pappy and Mimi". David and Corey (Gary's sons) came along and she was the happiest person around. She loved her grandchildren so much. When David was 2 weeks old they came to live with Pappy and Mimi after their mother abandoned them. Gary remarried and had one more son Garrett and that finished up the grandkids for now. Gerald went to work for the prison system until his retirement and he began to pastor. They moved to Alto in August 1990 to pastor the Assembly of God church there. Mimi was called Mimi by everyone in town, they loved her because she was a mom to all who knew her. She never met a stranger. In 1994 they started their own church "Trinity Christian Learning Center". In 1996 Evelyn was diagnosed with Lung Cancer during the first part of Donald's football season. She would go and have treatments and be at the next football game to watch him play and Corey be in the band. The team went to playoffs that year and one Friday afternoon she had gotten to the point she could not breath, Gerald took her to the hospital and by the time the game got started good there her purple coat was at the top of the bleachers. She had her lungs drained and here she came. She always wore a purple long coat and Donald could see her from the field. After every game he would fly to the top of the bleachers and hug her. The year the football team made it to state finals she got to see Donald and Corey on the field. Corey played the saxophone in the band and she loved to watch him march. The last vacation she got to take she mapped out where she wanted to take Donald, Corey and David. Don, Debbie, Pappy, Mimi and the boys headed out: she took them to Arizona, New Mexico and South Texas. They went to 4 corners and Pappy touched all 4 states at one time, Carlsbad Caverns, Grand Canyon, Tombstone, Arizona, a Ghost Town and several Indian landmarks. "Mimi enjoyed going to see caverns and seeing historical landmarks. In Arizona we went over the mountains to see the Ghost Town and the road was so narrow that Mimi and Debbie squealed the whole time; the grandsons really enjoyed making fun of them squealing. When they got back to Texas the boys wanted to go to Schlitterbahn and she went even though she was hurting so bad at this point she was not getting around good. On February 14, 1998 Gordon married Ellen Scantland and while getting ready for the wedding Evelyn broke both shoulder bones. She never said a word, Gerald brought her at the last minute to the wedding so none would know, as she walked down the aisle we all knew something was wrong. That night was the decline of her health, she had lived to see her baby happily married. She wanted to make it through to see all 3 of the grandsons graduate but did not make it for that. The last 3 weeks of her life was remarkable. She called all her family in to say goodbye to each of them and as she did she made sure that each of them knew Jesus. She was so determined that she share Jesus with everyone before he death. On Thursday the week before she died, that morning she woke up and needed to see her ambulance driver. She told Pappy to go and find him, Pappy did and he got a call out on an emergency and did not make it by the house. At 10:00 p.m. she had us call the ambulance service and asked for him again. She could not talk very good as it was a strain for her, when the driver got there he knelt beside her bed and asked her, "What can I do for you Mrs. Hooks?" And just as plain as day she asked him if he knew Jesus. He asked her what she meant and she asked again very plainly do you know Jesus. And he assured her that he did. He hugged her and left, later he said he could not get that question off his mind. The next day he suffered from a heat stroke and was o.k. but he remembered her words. All the way to the end was a ministry for her. She called Buddy Leach in and told him what to preach at her funeral and to have an altar call. She said she wanted people saved all the way to the end. At her funeral 3 people accepted Jesus that we knew of at the time. Later we found out several more including one of her nephews that passed on later. Her life during the last years of her life was about Jesus, everyone who knew her would say that.
