Notes
a. Note:   Have been told that a J. L. BELK married M. W. CRITENDIN (or CRITTENDEN) on 27 NOV 1879 in Fayette Co, TN
I need to verify this record....can anyone help?
I think that the J. L. may be James Lucius Belk, born Mar 1856 in MS, died 7 July 1936 in Shelby Co TN
and that M. W. Critendin/Crittenden was possibly his first wife.
The 1900 Shelby Co TN census shows Lucius Belk (with a second wife named Olivia). There are 9 children listed in this household but the 1st four were born to Lucius and his first wife (who I think may have been M. W. CRITENDIN or CRITTENDEN). These children are:
Ernest BELK b. Oct 1880 in TN Bessie BELK b. July 1883 in TN (married a Kenny) Zula BELK b. Feb 1884 in Shelby Co, TN (married a Rhodes) Lilly BELK b. June 1887 in TN
James Lucius Belk went by the name Lucius or Lucas and didn't appear to use his first name very often.
If someone can tell me how/where to put my hands on this marriage record, I'd sure appreciate it.
  Thanks for your help,
Kathy L. Rhodes Great Granddaughter of Zula Belk Rhodes

  -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hello Tina,
I do have an Olivia Sturgis born in Memphis; B May 1867. But this one I have married To James L Belk. Could James L Belk be James Lucius Belk? I don't know, but if you find anything on their children, that would be a big help trying to but this puzzle together.

I believe Lucius' second wife Olivia was my ggaunt. I know she married a Belk, first name unknown, as told to me by my great aunt. My Olivia was Olivia Sturgis born in Memphis around 1866. I typed in Olivia Belk on acestry.com and your site was the only thing that came up with her name. I am sure it is her, but don't have any way to prove it. Let me know if you have any further info.
  Thanks, Tina

[email protected]@att.net <[email protected]@att.net> 2/2004 Hi Tina,
Your family tree published on Ancestry.com has an Olivia Sturgis marrying a James Lucius Belk and although I do have a 1900 TN census record showing that an Olivia ? was married to a Lucius Belk in TN (she was a second wife) I think you've misidentified this Olivia...I don't really believe she is of the STURGIS family unless the census of 1870 is REALLY screwed up! See:
  http://content.ancestry.com/iexec?htx=View&r=an&dbid=7163&iid=TNM593_1560-0408
Judging by the birthdate and children's names, this census record is clearly the particular STURGIS family that you've identified...however it shows that the daughter you thought was OLIVIA is actually a SON named OLIVER! Handwriting is clear and sex is definitely MALE. I couldn't find the family in the 1880 census in TN to follow up on it, so I'm not absolutely sure....
I was really excited at first because I have long searched for info on Lucius Belk and his second wife Olivia, and thought I'd stumbled onto it in your file, but I think you've got it wrong here and was wondering if you have any other sources other than Arley Belk's GED file (full of mistakes btw!) as he simply "gathers" stuff off the internet without any other supporting documentation (I know this for a fact...he gathered my BELK family info and published it and continued to publish it long after I told him that it was incorrect/incomplete). A search for Arley's ged today now shows that he has removed the incorrect/incomplete BELK info that he obtained from me, BUT as I can see from your files you must have copied some info that he has now deleted before he got rid of it! (for instance, your James Lucius Belk isn't in his files anymore!)
Do you perhaps have any further documentation (other than what Arley Belk provided) on James Lucius Belk and his supposed wife Olivia Sturgis??? Perhaps that census record is full of stuff and Oliver is really OLIVIA a female and she is the right gal....but without further documentation it will be hard to prove...
  Thanks for your help!
  Sincerely,
Kathy L. Rhodes (GGG Granddaughter of Lucius Belk) Who is (I am almost positive the SAME person that you have listed as James Lucius Belk in your files!)
