For further and more detailed i nformation, see History of Guernsey Co Ohio, History of Noble C o Ohio, and Inde x to the War of 1812 Pension Files (#26082) George was born 30 Jan 1786 in G reene County, PA and died 3Mar 1847 in Boone Co IN. He was o rphaned in 1793 (a t the age of 7) when his mother died. His father had died i n 1789. In 1791 Da niel Jones (a neighboring family and member of the Goshen Baptist Church) was appointed George's guardian. On 7 Jan 1807 in Greene Co PA George m. Sarah Ca lvert (Born. 7 Dec 1785 Greene Co PA; died. 8 Jul 1845 Boo ne Co IN) In 1808 George and Sarah moved to Morgan (now Noble Co) Ohio. In 1 811 George built a lo g barn the Alexander McKeis' farm one mile north of Caldw ell Ohio. After comple ting the barn, George enlisted as a Private in Captain S imon Beymer's Co (from Guernsey Co) under the command of Colonel Robert Bay. T hey were stationed at B eam Blockhouse near Mansfield Ohio. Nine miles east of the Blockhouse was the home of Methodist preacher James Copus, his wife and n ine children. At the beg inning of the War of 1812 the British incited the Indi ans of northern Ohio to hostilities with the Americans. Because of this Copus a nd his family were broug ht to the Blockhouse for protection. Copus stayed a f ew days but declared he w as going to return home in spite of the warnings of t he Blockhouse Captain. A detachment of nine men (including George Dye) were sent toescort the Copus f amily home. When they arrived at the Copus cabin, al l was well. The soldiers sp ent the night in the barn and the soldiers prepared to return to the Blockhouse the next morning. Several soldiers were at the nea rby spring washing up, and had left their guns stacked up near the cabin. Durin g the night Indians had sur rounded the cabin and while some of the soldiers we re at the spring, they atta cked. They rushed in between the soldiers and the cabin and began firing . Thre e of the soldiers at the spring werekilled and scalped. Three others tried to run. Two (George Shibley and JohnTedrick) were killed and scalped. The third (Robert Arnoock) was wounded and escaped but his body was found a few days lat e |
