http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/v/e/r/Steven-C-Verden/GENE2-0007.html William was a farmer, and during his lifetime he bought a considerable amount of Clay County land (Deed Books: 33, page 21; 27, page 461; 32,page 315 & 378). On May 23, 1870, he sold land to the Faubion Chapel Methodist Episcopal Church, South. William enlisted at Milford in Company "F", 3rd Missouri Volunteer Infantry, CSA, on May 1, 1861, and was discharged at Pineville, Missouri on November 14, of that same year. He was among those whose Loyality Oaths and Bonds were taken by the Provost Marshall in Liberty, Missouri on November 19, 1862. William and Mariam had no children of their own but they reared Mary Jane, a daughter of William's brother John B. and his second wife, Sarah Collins. For a time they also kept Cassandra Mosby, a daughter of William's deceased sister Leah. They moved to Barton County: when they were no longer able to maintain their property, they gave up housekeeping and made their home with Mary Jane and her husband Perry Crites. They are buried in the Crites family plot.
