Note: The following was copied from "the History of Bartholomew County" obtained from the Columbus, Indiana Library: Thomas F. McCallie - Prominent among the representative farmers and buisiness men of Bartholomew County, is the gentleman whose name introduces this biographical sketch. Mr. McCalllie was born in Knox County, Tenn., February 3, 1837 , and is the son of David E. and Nancy (Hart) McCallie. Paternally, he is decended from Scotch ancestors, his great grandfather, John McCallie, immigrating to the United States from Scotland a number of years ago. His grandparents were John and Mary (Eagleton) Mccallie, early residents of Tennessee, in which state David E. McCallie was born. The following are the names of the children born to David E. and Nancy McCallie: Thomas F., Mary E., Margaret L., Josephine, Allie J., Emma, John C., Samuel B., and Dora In 1845, the family moved to Indiana, settling in Clay County, and later moved to Bartholomew County, and settled about four miles east of Columbus. David E. McCallie followed farming and carpentering for some years, and subsequently engaged in the mercantile buisness. Thomas F. McCallie was nine years of age when his parents moved to Indiana, and seventeen years of age when he became a resident of Bartholomew County. He was reared on a farm, and early learned the carpenter's trade, which he followed for some time in the town of Newbern. He became quite proficient in his trade, and quite a number of the leading buildings in the village and adjacent country were erected under his personal supervision. After continuing mercantile pursuits about four years, he engaged in the mercantile buisness, which he disposed of in 1875, and purchased a fine farm of 165 acres in Section 9, adjacent to Newbern on the west. Since the above year he has given his attention exclusively to farming and stock-raising, in which he has met with much more than ordinary success, being one of the leading agriculturists of the county at this time. In 1885, he erected a magnificent dwelling, the finest country residence in the county, which with the other improvements on his large highly cultivated farm, denote the presence of the prosperous farmer and superior manager. He owns 300 acres of valuable land, all but twenty acres of which are in cultivation. Mr. McCallie is a Republican in politics, and a member of the Masonic order, belonging to Hartsville Lodge No. 547. He served as Notory Public for twenty years, and had held other posititons, in all of which he proved a painstaking and able officical. May 26, 1859, He married Sarah J. Frost, a native of Bartholomew County, daughter of John and Drusilla (Lemar) Frost. Mr. and Mrs. McCallie have had thirteeen children, the following living, viz: Charles Franklin, Corda Alice, Orian Marshall, May M., Clarence E., Lillie E., Lewis E., and Minnie L.
